Graduate / Study Plan for Canada Study Permit- MEng in Civil and Env Engineering. [2]
Hi guys, I would need help reviewing this study plan for my MEng in Canada. I have previously being rejected my application because I forgot to submit information required in IMM5850e and I addressed it in my first paragraph. Is this too long for a study plan? Thanks alot!

After consulting with the international student office staff at University of Western Ontario (UWO), Canada, I realized that I did not submit the complete information required in IMM5850e due to my own lack of research. Therefore, I am resubmitting my application with required information in this application package. In the refusal letter, I understand the concerns the Consulate General of Canada has regarding my financial source to support my studies, several factors that led the previous officer to believe I would not leave Canada at the end of my stay, and my insufficient evidence of valid U.S. immigration status document, as well as meeting the academic conditions specified on my Letter of Acceptance. Therefore, I would like to apologize, and I am confident that the current application package will clear up any concerns you had with my previous application.
I graduated from the State University of New York at Buffalo in the United States (US). During my study there from 2013 to 2016, I earned a Bachelor of Science in Environmental Engineering. Through my studies in the undergraduate program, I gained extensive engineering knowledge which allowed me to pursue my career path. At my in time environmental engineering program, I worked on several developmental and professional projects that equipped me with the knowledge of various sectors in the environmental engineering field, such as soil mechanics, hydrogeology, drinking water and wastewater infrastructure, water resources, air pollution, and hazardous waste remediation. These have been instrumental for my undergraduate studies and for my career. I expect they will be just as important for my graduate studies at University of Western Ontario. Through my studies and these projects, I developed keen interest in wastewater and water resources engineering.
After graduating from the University at Buffalo, I was employed by the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality (TCEQ) as an Environmental Permit Specialist. I worked there from June 2016 to December 2018 (Please see attached resume). At the TCEQ, I was able to apply what I learned from school directly to my job, where my main responsibilities were to oversee water quality and wastewater system in the state of Texas. I worked alongside professional water engineers and realized how rewarding it is to work in the water field. As my passion grew in the field of water resources engineering, I realized the knowledge I obtained from my undergraduate studies and work is just the tip of an iceberg.
As I was researching the environmental issue in Malaysia, I discovered that flash floods are still a constant threat to many of the coastal cities, including my hometown, Sibu. One of the main reasons flash floods happens is because of the lack of technical expertise in stormwater management. Specifically, the drainage system and the coastline maintenance are not adequate to direct stormwater effectively to prevent flash floods. The impacts that the flooding can inflict on a city and on people's lives include damaged property, caused workplaces to shut down, and destroyed crops and natural resources. To this day, I can recall a particularly severe flooding event when I was twelve years old, my family and I were trapped in our house for a week and sustained ourselves only on rice and soy sauce. Flash flooding is a serious problem in Malaysia, and I want to be part of the solution. I will be able to apply the skills I obtained from my work experience in the USA and advanced technical knowledge I will have gained from one of Canada's top graduate programs when I go back to Malaysia.
After completing the graduate program, I plan on taking these skills and expertise developed through my studies and applying it in Malaysia where there is a dire need for such expertise. During my search for a Master's degree program, I determined that universities in western hemisphere offer a broad scope of intellectual and academic development. However, I've discovered that UWO in Canada and its experienced faculty and innovative research is what appeals to me. Such an opportunity is not as easily attainable elsewhere. I will be working on my thesis in stormwater management under my graduate supervisor, Professor Raouf Baddour. He has more than 20 years of research experience in water resources engineering. His expertise and research in stormwater management and environmental hydraulics will provide me with the knowledge, skills, and experience necessary to help solve stormwater management problems in Malaysia.
The University of Western Ontario is ranked first in Canada and 14th worldwide by the Academic Ranking of World Universities for their Civil and Environmental Engineering program. Furthermore, I will have the opportunity to study advanced hydrology and hydraulics analysis, water and wastewater treatment which will be extremely essential for me as an engineer when I return to Malaysia. I am confident that the combination of its innovative program, research facilities, and renowned faculty members will shape me into a successful engineer. Also, studying at UWO will not only satisfy my intellectual curiosity, it will also allow me to experience Canadian culture. After all, the city of London is known for being a "student city". For these reasons, I had applied and got accepted into UWO to begin my Civil and Environmental Engineering graduate program in January 2019, which will end in December 2021. However, my previous student permit application was denied due to incomplete submission, and the school had agreed to defer my official enrollment to May 2019.
Moreover, UWO provides me with suitable costs of living and studying. By comparing universities in USA and Malaysia with UWO in Canada, the quality of education in Canada provides the best rate of return and more superior in terms of the professors' expertise, research facility, their field of research, and the tuition costs. Similar quality schools such as Stanford or New York University would cost twice as much as UWO. Additionally, the quality of graduate education in civil engineering in Malaysia does not compete favourably with UWO.
My parents will be paying for the tuition fees, housing fees, transportation fees, and any other expenses necessary during my study in Canada (please see Proof of Financial Support). My parents are sponsoring my studies because my parents want me to be as successful as possible. Therefore, my parents had saved up the money beforehand so that I can further my studies when I want to. Their financial status and assets are included in the application package. Additionally, I also saved up some money in my personal saving account to supplement the expenses for my graduate studies. The amount of funding from my parents and savings will be sufficient to cover the tuition fees and living costs per immigration guideline. My bank statements will reflect this.
I have four family members that are currently living in Malaysia, both of my parents and two younger brothers. It has been six years since I last saw them. I was not able to go home and visit them due to my busy study schedule and work in USA. Additionally, since my parents are approaching retirement age, I want to compensate for my six years of absence by spending more time with my family. As the eldest son in the family, I have the responsibility to provide for my family. My two younger brothers will be starting their college soon. I will be helping my dad to provide for the family since I can develop a stronger career in Malaysia with my Canadian graduate degree. Also, I will be able to assist him with his hotel business during my free time. Last six years had been difficult for me because I have only been able to communicate with my parents through video calls. They are only going to get older and older every day. Therefore, I have strong personal reasons to return to my family upon completion of my graduate degree.
Since I turned 18, I have travelled to the United States of America to study from 2013 to 2016. I had always maintained valid student status in this timeframe. I have also visited Canada two times, travelling from Buffalo NY with my Canadian visitor visa. Once in October 2015, and once in May 2016. Since 2016, the government of USA had granted me employment authorization that allowed me to work full-time by participating in Optional Practical Training (OPT) under my student visa. Currently, I am enrolled in San Jose State University (SJSU) in the USA as a full-time student with a valid student status. This study will also help me gain enough credit at UWO through credit transfer.
