Undergraduate / Progress has different definitions; Is progress always good? [4]
Please, check my essay.
Prompt: Do you agree or disagree that progress is always good?
Progress has different definitions. One some of the most popular definition of progress is moving forward. Nowadays, people can see progress in different aspects of life such as industry, agriculture and communication. Even though many people think that progress is a positive thing, I think that progress is not always good, and in this essay I will explain my opinion.
Nowadays, there are many technological developments such as Internet, mobile communication, television and computers which make people's lives easier and more comfortable. All of these improvements have some advantages and disadvantages. For example, Internet gives people ability to communicate with people who are in different locations. Internet has many benefits; with the help of Internet people may easily get new knowledge, watch news, communicate with friends, sell or buy products etc. Nowadays, it is hardly possible to imagine our world without Internet. On the other hand, there are also strong scientific facts which state that the intense usage of the Internet limit interactions of people and make them less social; and maybe people may spend most of the day on the Internet; and the world may become absolutely virtual. Mobile phones also very useful and comfortable for communication but many scientists postulate that mobile phones may bring about cancer.
With rapidly increasing industrialization our world becomes more polluted especially in the "developing countries" such as China and India. Many multinational companies transfer their factories and other operations to the developing countries because of the availability of cheap labor and raw materials. People who live in and near developing countries cannot breathe fresh air; animals cannot survive because of chemical waste left in their environment. These factories pollute ground water and then humankind may have a lack of clean water. Pollution is one of the main reasons for human diseases.
Another reason why I think that progress is not always good is that almost all developments make people's lives more nervous, stressful and can cause psychological disorders because there many competitions in every aspect of life.
To sum up, by explaining some of effects of progress above, it is obvious that progress is not always positive. Progress always has two sides ï bad and good; when Einstein was creating atomic bomb he was not thinking about the catastrophe which this bomb would make in Hiroshima and Nagasaki, he was thinking about the progress. Progress depends on the cultural level of the people who use the results of progress. I believe that in the future people will be reasonable and avert the negative side of progress. I will try to contribute to the prevention of the negative side of progress.
