Letters / Erasmus Mundus Master - Public Health Motivation letter; motivations for the course and career plans [2]
Hi all!
I need your helping hands when it comes to my motivation letter for the Erasmus Mundus Scholorship for Master in Public Health.
o Your letter should not exceed 600 words.
o Write about your motivations for the course: why would you like to study public health, how are your career plans connected with this programme
o It should include strong justification for your second year specialization choice.
o This essay should not be a literary work. It should provide a concrete justification of why you are a good candidate for the programme.
o It is recommended to mention the specific interest in the area of public health you would like to work on during your studies or/and after
Three-quarters of the global mental health burden exists in low- and middle-income countries, yet the lack of mental health services in resource-poor settings is striking. As the second-most populous country, the alarmingly high rate of the treatment gap of any mental disorder in India is a cause for great concern. Mental health issue is on one of India's major public health concerns - and one of its most neglected. However, mental health issues are often stigmatised in India, leading to many not seeking help. I would like to be part of innovative researches to reduce the mental health treatment gap in India through strengthening health systems by incorporating community with the aid of digital technologies. I believe the Masters in Public Health from X will equip me with the required skills and hands-on experience to achieve my career goals.
The professors drawn from around the world coupled with the fact that students from a multidisciplinary background not only make this program a unique opportunity to excel academically but also facilitate a platform to broaden horizons by cultural exchange. Looking at health with a global perspective will motivate to understand differences between healthcare systems of different countries and the way they administer their health policies. Working as a Data Manager for a clinical trial, apart from managing database and designing Case Report Forms for assuring data quality, I have been exposed to sample size calculation and randomization schedules which kindle my interest in Biostatistics. The coursework offered by XXX university, ranging from infectious disease modelling to elective courses in epidemiology, will enable me to acquire an in-depth knowledge in Biostatistics which in turn hone my skills for measuring the effectiveness and impact of research programmes to ensure their appropriateness and improvement. Moreover, I aspire to become closely integrate with the research facilities at the X campus, especially the XXX project and thereby to make sure to utilise my skills obtained from my previous longitudinal survey experience.
My education and research experience thus far have given me a strong basis with which to pursue further studies. Additionally, my professional experiences had sharpened my programming skills and gave chances to learn new statistical tools. For instance, I have had the opportunity to conducted RASCH analysis using WINSTEPS under the guidance of Dr. XXX in order to develop a tool to measure the competency of the non-specialist community health workers to deliver an evidence-based brief psychological treatment for depression. It was both challenging and rewarding at the same time.
In addition to research, I am actively being part of the outreach activities on mental health issues since dissemination of the scientific outcome is equally important to create the desired impact in the society. Led a week long awareness campaign as part of the world suicide prevention week which includes collaborating with the state government for establishing helpline facilities to organizing a panel discussion with the general public, students, and the experts. Through all these outreach events, I have picked up a unique way to communicate science to a wide array of audience through a broad variety of media, and I anticipate to avail and enhance these skills during my time at XXXX. From serving in student council board to co-founding a statistical club in the college, I consistently spent time assuming leadership roles during my Bachelors, which reflected in my decision-making skills and professional life as a whole.
I firmly believe that the coursework in the Masters programme will complement my previous academic and research experience and serve as a foundation for my future career. I am confident that by the end of my graduate study, I will be able to contribute my humble part as a Biostatistician in India's journey to achieve its Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) for health by 2030.
