Scholarship / Pharmacobiochemistry and environmental biochemistry; Study objective for Fullbright students program [2]

study/research objectives, and reasons to pursue them

my prompt::
Write a clear and detailed description of your study/research objectives, and give your reasons for wanting to pursue them․ Be specific about your major field and your specialized interests within this field․ Describe the kind of program you expect to undertake, and explain how your study plan fits in with your previous training and your future objectives․ This statement is an essential part of your application and is required․

My main research interest encompasses pharmacobiochemistry and environmental biochemistry. My future study and research will be an opportunity to empower myself in the areas of purification and identification of the components in the aqueous extract of the leaves of mangifera indica. This plant has shown to be relevant in malaria therapy and prophylaxis as well as other ailments.

This study encompasses isolation and identification of mangiferin, parasitisation of adult male albino swiss mice using Plasmodium berghei-berghei. The treatment of the same by oral administration of Mangiferin alone, and also comparing the synergistic effect of mangiferin and known antimalarial medication including Arthemeter-Lumefanthrine and Fansidar. In this study, I will also be testing for the therapeutic effect of mangiferin individually and its combination with these drugs to see whether in combination it potentiates and could help alleviate drug resistance.

At the end of the study, I will be testing the biochemical indices including the hematological indices, liver function indices, kidney function indices and cardiac function parameters. I will also look at the histology of the liver, the kidney and the heart.

My academic background in biochemistry has provided the critical skills needed and my mentorship by my supervisor, Prof. E. J. Akpan has also provided the experience needed for pharmacological studies.

With the background mentioned, I believe I am positioned to solve a problem in my community being the eradication of malarial which is a global concern, especially with the development of resistance to the existing antimalarial drugs in use. I believe that this research will position me to gain the skills and knowledge needed to add value to solve this problem. I will also be very fulfilled to finish my PhD, not just the theoretical knowledge, but to gain mastery of important skills, which in the course of this research will include, High performance Liquid Chromatography (HPLC), Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR), Liquid Chromatography Mass Spectroscopy (LCMS) which are important techniques for the research discussed. I see myself able to empower many young researchers with the skills gained and use the network of the Full Bright platform for future collaborations which could explore many more potentials for both mangiferin and other locally available plants for their therapeutic potentials.
