Writing Feedback / The urbanisation rate in South Korea and Indonesia [2]

The urbanisation rate in South Korea and Indonesia

The chart illustrates the urban growth rate in South Korea and Indonesia over a period of 40 years from 1969. Overall, both countries witnessed considerable increases in their urbanization rates, with South Korea consistently maintaining a higher rate than Indonesia during the period shown.

In 1969, the rates of urbanization of South Korea and Indonesia were roughly 35 and 20 respectively. After a decade, while the figures of Indonesia stabilized, there was a slight rise of 15 percent in the figures of South Korea. It is also noteworthy that in 1989, after the two figures had experienced a moderate growth, South Korea's urban development rate reached to 70 percent, which was nearly three times as high as that of Indonesia with approximately 25 percent.

In the subsequent decade, the city growth rate of Indonesia started to go up tremendously, which is recorded to surge to 35 percent in 1999. Similarly, South Korea's rate continued to rise by nearly 10 percent. Between 1999 and 2009, while the rates of urbanization in South Korea peaked at approximately 83 percent, persisting at this level for a few years, that figure of Indonesia saw a dramatic increase to 50 percent.
