Despite having one of the largest economies in Africa with a Gross Domestic Product (GDP) of approximately $363 million (World bank, 2023), Nigeria still struggles to achieve the United Nations 2030 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). This is due to several factors, most notably poor infrastructure, and lack of innovative technology. This stresses the vital need for cutting-edge solutions such as Artificial intelligence (AI). This has motivated me to pursue a postgraduate degree in AI in the UK, a country known for its significant investment in AI research and technology to gain the knowledge required to build innovative AI-driven solutions that will help drive Nigeria's economic growth

My undergraduate study in software engineering and my experience as an Information Technology (IT) Support officer working in the Digital innovation and transformation department have equipped me with the required skills needed to excel in my chosen course. Also, I completed a six (6) month training course on "Web development using Python" offered at Aptech Computer Education where I was exposed to the fundamentals of Python which is regarded as the most popular programming language for AI. This experience motivated me to further my studies.

The MSc Artificial Intelligence offered at Heriot-Watt University is my first choice. The institution houses the National Robotarium, the UK's center for Robotics and AI which promotes partnerships to develop sustainable innovative AI solutions for different global issues. I anticipate meeting with Professor ***, Academic Co-lead of Robotarium, to gain insights into developing AI solutions for Nigeria's various problems. The university's Edinburgh campus, home to Oriam, Scotland's National Performance Center is another place I would like to visit to maintain physical fitness. Edinburgh, a city with a crime rate of less than 16%, offers a safe environment for receiving quality education.

My next option is the MSc in Artificial Intelligence offered at Queen Mary University of London. The institution is part of the Russel group, a community of twenty-four research-oriented universities based in the UK. I am particularly interested in the computer vision module taught by Professor ****. The concept of computer vision was used to develop the Re-identification software integrated into CCTV cameras. This project was built under the leadership of Professor ****, and I aim to improve its use for faster criminal tracking in Nigeria.

The MSc Artificial Intelligence program offered at the University of Surrey is my third option. I am keen on connecting with Professor Yi-Zhe Song, the Programme leader, who shares my research interests in Computer vision. I am particularly drawn to the elective module on AI and Sustainability instructed by Dr.***. This course will equip me with the knowledge to develop more sustainable AI techniques and solutions to support the United Nations' SDGs in Nigeria.

Studying in the UK via the Chevening scholarship will offer me the chance to network with top AI professionals, gain insights, and apply this knowledge to build innovative solutions that will help Nigeria fulfill its 2030 SDG targets.

Chevening is looking for individuals with strong professional relationship-building skills, who will engage with the Chevening community and influence and lead others in their chosen profession. Please explain how you build and maintain relationships in a professional capacity, using clear examples of how you currently do this, and outline how you hope to use these skills in the future.

Professional relationships are key to sustainable development in all areas of life and their importance cannot be overemphasized.

In April 2024, during my participation in the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) Programme in Lagos, Nigeria, I was seeking employment for the upcoming year. Despite applying to various job positions without receiving any responses, I Persevered. Through my department's WhatsApp group, I connected with [name], a former coursemate at Babcock University, who had shared an Information Technology (IT) support job opening. After expressing my interest via text messages, I sent her my CV, which she forwarded to the recruitment officer, leading to an interview and securing the role at Whyte Cleon Limited. It came as a shock to me that [classmate name] would also end up working there and we ended up being colleagues in the same department.

In May 2024, [officer 1 name], a Service Delivery Unit (SDU) officer at Whyte Cleon, expressed his challenge in manually sending birthday wishes to his staff. He complained that it was becoming tiring for him to always open his excel sheet every day and take note of the staff that were celebrating birthdays that day. I was assigned to automate this process and successfully developed a system using Microsoft Power Automate and Excel. Upon presenting the project to my supervisor, [name], he suggested enhancing the system by embedding a birthday image in the email body that will be sent to staff. I found it a challenge initially but with guidance from [coursemate name], I overcame it, and I successfully implemented the image embedding. The project not only impressed [officer 1] but also gained interest from two (2) other officers, [officer 2] and [officer 3] who both requested similar implementations on their laptops. This project proved beneficial to both [course mate name] and I as we acquired new skills through this project.

Also, after completing my undergraduate studies, I sustained the relationship I had built with one of my lecturers, Prof. [name] who was also my project supervisor. I achieved this through frequent text messages via WhatsApp. My ability to maintain this network till date made it easier for Prof. [name] to write reference letters which I would use for my various university admissions.

As a potential Chevening Scholar, with an aim to contribute meaningfully to Chevening growth, I will build networks through active participation in all Chevening events, most notably the annual Chevening conference. This will provide me with the opportunity to present a paper which I will title "The role of AI towards environmental sustainability." Also, I will engage actively in all course activities at my chosen universities in the UK.
Upon returning to Nigeria, I will engage actively with the Nigeria Chevening alumni network by connecting with fellow scholars who shares the same interest with me to provide innovative AI solutions that will assist the United Nations 2030 Sustainable Development Goals in Nigeria.
