Scholarship / "A project coordinator" - Chevening: Leadership and influence [2]
Does it fit the essay topic?
Leadership is a way to influence people and help them grow. To my mind, effective leadership lies in inspiring others to achieve a common goal and drive significant positive change. As a future leader, my major aim is to influence others to change themselves and their surroundings for the better.
I started my leadership journey when I was asked to co-organize a street action as a volunteer. The experience taught me how to communicate effectively with different people, including residents and representatives of the city council, about the importance of renewable energy sources. We managed to garner support of 14 thousand people, and submitted the petition to facilitate Ukraine's transition to 100% renewable and safe energy to the Ukrainian government.
My professional leadership journey started when I began my career as a project coordinator at Ecoclub, which is the NGO focusing on environmental topics and especially renewable energy. As of today, I have successfully led 4 projects. In the context of my leadership growth, the most valuable one was the project in partnership with Oxfam, aimed at installing solar power plants for water utilities. In the course of the project implementation, I faced multiple challenges that required strategic thinking, decisive action, strong communication and adaptability. In particular, I had to adapt the strategy I had developed in the beginning of the project to address the changing circumstances Ukraine encountered due to the war outbreak. To address technical difficulties, such as integrating solar power plants with existing infrastructure, I organized problem-solving meetings and communicated with technical experts. I ensured involvement of community representatives in decision-making and maintained transparent communication to build trust and cooperation. As a result, despite the risks, the solar power plant was installed in Sumy, located near the Russian border, providing critical energy support during power outages. The given success inspired the community to pursue five more solar projects, reflecting the sustainable impact of my strategic efforts.
In addition, I have been committed to building the capacity of my team. I provide clear guidance, maintain regular weekly communication and offer both personal and professional development opportunities for each of them. Moreover, I organize appraisal interviews to determine how to further improve their work and help them create development plans. In fact, one of my team members has been promoted to the position of a project coordinator. Witnessing her progress and achievements has been incredibly rewarding. Being passionate about guiding others, I often take part in presentations, round-table discussions and conferences where I can share my experience and knowledge.
The challenges I have faced have refined my skills and deepened my dedication to sustainable development. Pursuing further studies in Renewable Energy Systems under the Chevening Scholarship will definitely contribute to my growth as a leader, equip me with the needed skills and knowledge to have a long-lasting impact in the field of renewable energy. Consequently, I will lead more complex projects, drive impactful policy initiatives, and mentor others in the renewable energy sector.
