Scholarship / CHEVENING: LEADERSHIP THROUGH EMPOWERMENT [2]

Kindly give your review of my essay

As a future leader, I envision empowering others to drive positive change in Nigeria. My transformative journey began during a 2017 internship at XYZ Airport. A pivotal moment came when my manager encouraged me to confront and replace a runway light, igniting unshakeable confidence. I realized leadership isn't about personal conquests, but empowering others.

I led 54 engineering students in the Community-Based Experience Service (COBES) initiative at XYZ Village, XYZ State in 2018. COBES fosters community development through student engagement. I organized a town hall discussion, identifying common problems and proposing lasting solutions. A comprehensive proposal secured financial grants from the university coordinator. Key achievements included rehabilitating the community bus stop, water purification, installing transformer gates, and restoring streetlights. These efforts enhanced residents' quality of life and instilled community ownership.

As General Secretary of the National Association of Electrical Engineering Students (NAEES), I noticed a decline in student internship placements at top companies caused by inadequate industry connections and limited research resources. To bridge this gap, I undertook two key initiatives: enhancing industry connections and improving employability via skills development and access to resources. I established the NAEES E-library, providing 500 students access to 100+ Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) journals. I also organized a seminar featuring XYZ's Chief Commercial Officer, who shared valuable insights on securing internships. I facilitated Embedded Systems and Automation training for 21 students by securing funding from local CEOs.These efforts yielded significant results. Internship opportunities surged at top companies, with all 21 trained students securing placements in multinational companies like XYZ and XYZ.

After graduation, I joined XYZ in 2021 as a Founding Engineer, building their mobile app. Rapid growth from 10k to 100k users posed operational and engineering challenges. I took the role of a Technical Product Manager to scale the engineering team while maintaining innovation and collaboration standards. To achieve this, I set up a comprehensive hiring strategy, simplified operation processes, and mentored engineers through peer programming sessions. These actions yielded significant results: a 40% increase in the engineering team's productivity, a 30% reduction in onboarding time, and the successful hiring of five engineers within two months. Foodcourt subsequently raised $X millions and expanded to XYZ creating 150+ jobs.

Through these experiences, I've demonstrated strategic leadership, team empowerment, and collaborative problem-solving skills needed to drive XYZ's logistics innovation in Nigeria. The Chevening scholarship will empower me with global perspectives, AI expertise, and strategic connections to drive XYZ's success and transform Nigeria's logistics landscape. My vision for scalable, sustainable development will become a reality, improving lives and contributing to Nigeria's economic growth.
