Letters / Motivational Letter for Erasmus RePIC Joint Masters Program / National Development Planning [2]

Dear Admissions Committee,

I am writing because i am excited to join and hopefully be included in the RePIC study program because of its groundbreaking interdisciplinary approach to post-industrial urban transformation challenges. I am particularly interested in the specialization track Urban Transformation and Resilience since it aligns with my interest in the concepts of smart cities and green cities-two ideas that have been central to Indonesian policymakers' efforts to address urbanization challenges and improve housing conditions. The program's international collaboration and hands-on learning methodology provide the perfect foundation to explore adaptive reuse strategies, brownfield regeneration, and participatory urbanism.

The program's emphasis on international cooperation and experiential learning provides the ideal environment to further my expertise in sustainable city revitalization. In particular, I would like to learn about how shrinking and economically declining cities can utilize systems of integrated planning to develop long-term revitalization. Through engagement with practitioners, policymakers, and local actors, I would like to develop novel solutions to bridge policy frameworks and on-the-ground realities.
My education in Public Administration has provided me with a strong understanding of city management, policy analysis, and the internal dynamics of cities One of the subjects I studied was Regional and Urban Development, through which I learned various approaches to urban development, city and rural development, policy instruments for regional and urban planning, and the governance aspects of urban transformation. I also have experience working as a junior consultant at the Ministry of National Development Planning for two years, where I was involved in helping to monitor the progress of Indonesia's new Capital City (Ibu Kota Nusantara) project. This role allowed me to evaluate development indicators, examine the implementation of policies, and collaborate with stakeholders so they would align with national objectives. I'm currently involved in a new initiative in terms of observing the social infrastructure of Indonesia's urbanized areas, continuing my learning around urban planning and integrating policy.

With my professional and academic experience, I can reconcile socio-economic, environmental, and policy-driven perspectives in urban change. My professional experience also complemented my analytical skills with a strong emphasis on quantifying the impact of
urban policies on community well-being and sustainability. My expertise in GIS, urban analytics, and community engagement also complement the multidisciplinary orientation of urban studies, enabling me to look at urban issues from diverse perspectives. I would like to utilize my abilities to assist this programme, collaborating with fellow students and instructors in developing innovative concepts for sustainable and inclusive cities.
Post-industrial cities are plagued by a host of problems, such as stagnant economies, environmental degradation, and social disparities. Indonesia, which is fast urbanizing, has enormous challenges in planning its cities, especially in reducing greenhouse gas emissions. The building sector has been the highest emitter, contributing 33% of the emissions between 2011 and 2021. Further, the country has a huge housing shortage of 9.9 million units in 2023 due to variations in prices, market fragmentation, and heightened migration to urban regions. To attain the Indonesia Emas 2045 vision, there is a need to address problems like natural disaster hazards, spatial planning limitations, climate change effects, and the necessity for adaptive infrastructure while promoting environmental sustainability.
Indonesia's urban development has significant issues, such as excessive greenhouse gas emissions. The buildings alone account for approximately 33% of these emissions between 2011 and 2021. Indonesia also faces a significant housing issue, with a housing shortage of an estimated 9.9 million in 2023. This is due to price disparities, segmented markets, and rapid urbanization. In order to achieve the Indonesia Emas 2045 vision, there is a need to address planning challenges, climate risks, and the demand for adaptable infrastructure while ensuring the safety of the environment.

To meet such challenges, Indonesia is building Ibu Kota Nusantara (IKN) as a forest city with a focus on green space and ecological balance. The city is planned to function as a sponge city, with circular water systems integrated into urban planning and infrastructure. IKN also aspires to be a smart city, utilizing digital innovation for efficient urban management. By studying successful case studies and applying experimental urban design methods, I aim to help achieve sustainable restructuring of fast urbanizing cities. Through RePIC, I aim to devise interdisciplinary solutions that balance environmental sustainability, economic growth, and social equity.
From the RePIC study program, I expect a comprehensive learning process in which different topics are combined with applicability. I am especially excited about working together with experts, professionals, and like-minded peers who focus on tackling city challenges like how to manage climate change, improving infrastructure, and developing sustainable cities. The use of case studies on real-world situations will offer insightful lessons on new urban strategies. The mobility component is especially appealing, giving first-hand exposure to heterogeneous urban environments, fostering a comparative perspective towards sustainable urban planning, resilience initiatives, and smart city development.

After finishing RePIC, I will still work for the Ministry of National Development Planning. I will be helping to create and apply policies for sustainable urbanization. My background of observing the new capital city project in Indonesia has given me insights into the country's urban challenges. I expect to use what I learn from RePIC to strengthen climate resilience, adaptive infrastructure, and inclusive housing solutions. In the long term, I would like to fund research and develop policies that enable cities to transform sustainably, particularly in rapidly developing countries such as Indonesia. With RePIC's broad scope and global perspective, I feel confident that I will acquire the skills and networking opportunities necessary to initiate meaningful change in the way cities are resilient and sustainable.
Thank you for your time and consideration. I am excited about the possibility of serving and learning with the RePIC community.
