leadership and service - Women in Engineering - mastercard foundation [3]
Leadership has always meant more than holding a position. It is the responsibility to create opportunities, empower others and drive lasting change. My experience as the Deputy Mentorship Head for the Women in Engineering (WinE) community in my final year of university stands as one of the most defining examples of this philosophy in action. In this role, I learned that genuine leadership is rooted in identifying needs, mobilizing people, and working collaboratively toward solutions that uplift the entire community.
In recent months, my vision for service has grown into a community focused initiative. I am currently working on a project to collaborate with Aksa Energy to engage young students in nearby community schools on sustainability. The aim is to help them understand how environmental issues directly affect their future and to show that everyone regardless of age or background has a role to play in protecting our planet. Through interactive discussions, practical demonstrations, and storytelling, this project seeks to empower the next generation with knowledge and encourage sustainable habits at the household and community levels.
The project follows and simple approach. First, I will be working with colleagues to create engaging and age-appropriate learning materials such as visual posters, short demonstrations, and activity sheets that explains climate change and energy conservation in relatable ways. We aim to coordinating with school administrators to plan the visits and tailor the sessions to the needs of each class. During the school visits, our team will lead interactive workshops that combine short discussions, hands-on activities, and storytelling. The goal is to help the students connect environmental issues to their own lives and understand that everyday actions like saving electricity, reducing waste, or planting trees have real impact. By using examples from their communities and encouraging them to express their ideas, we hope to create a learning experience that feels personal and empowering.
This experience will strengthen my ability to contribute meaningfully to climate change and sustainability by building early environmental consciousness and equipping young people with the knowledge to make responsible choices. By teaching students how climate change affects their communities and showing them simple actions they can take, it helps shapes long-term behavioural change.
Ultimately, this leadership path has shaped not just the work I do, but the kind of engineer I aspire to be. This blend of community engagement and professional purpose grounds my commitment to sustainability and fuels my determination to help create an energy future that is cleaner, fairer, and more resilient for the generations that follow.
