ESSAY
My interest in fashion began not with trends, but with admiration. Watching how a simple fabric could be transformed into something meaningful through accuracy and meticulous design. This feeling first appeared when I saw designers turn ordinary materials into elegant garments, making me realize that fashion is another way people tell their stories, where structure, detail, and emotion come together. That realization was reinforced when I discovered Nigel Chia on YouTube. Seeing him create refined, doll-sized garments changed the way I viewed fashion, from something simply wearable into an expressive craft defined by intention, design execution, and emotional depth. Since then, fashion has become more than an interest for me. It is a meaningful form of expression that I aim to pursue academically and professionally.
I graduated form Cinta Budaya School with a Science major. While my academic achievements may be considered average, my educational journey still reflects consistency, curiosity, and a strong willingness to learn. Coming from a science background has shaped the way I think, encouraging a more logical and structured method that I am still learning to apply in fashion design, especially in pattern-making, garment structure, and problem-solving. As part of my academic preparation, I chose Korean language as my subject in the national academic assessment, reflecting my growing interest in Korean culture and education.
Throughout my education, I actively explored creative activities. From participating in Art and Crafts during elementary school, learning cross-stitch embroidery and crochet, to joining Visual Arts, Mandarin Language, and Math Club in high school, these experiences helped me develop a stronger attention to detail and creativity. Although I have not participated in formal fashion competitions and professional workshops yet, these practical experience taught me the value of craftmanship and the satisfaction of creating something meaningful with my own hands.
My understanding about fashion has also been shaped by influential figures such as Nigel Chia and Jimmy Choo. Their work inspired me to appreciate elegance, detail, and cultural identity within design. Watching their journeys encouraged me to believe that fashion does not always begin with privilege, but with passion, dedication, and continuous learning.
I pursue Fashion Design studies in South Korea because of its strong education system and quickly growing fashion industry, which successfully combines traditional craftmanship with modern innovation. Korean universities emphasize studio-based learning, discipline, and creativity that strongly align with my learning style and academic goals. Moreover, studying in a multicultural academic environment will allow me to broaden my perspective and develop designs that are globally relevant while remaining culturally meaningful and socially aware.
The Global Korea Scholarship is essential for me to achieve these goals. With GKS support, I would be able to focus entirely on my academic and creative development without financial burden. The language training, academic support, and international network provided by GKS will equip me with the skills, responsibility, and global mindset needed to grow not only as a designer, but also as a thoughtful contributor to the international creative community. In the long term, I aim to contribute to my home country by sharing knowledge, promoting craftsmanship, and supporting the growth of Indonesia's creative and fashion industries. Through international exposure and professional experience, including potential opportunities in Korea. I seek to gain a global perspective that I can later bring back to collaborative projects and initiatives in Indonesia. I intend to collaborate with local craftspeople, encourage people to explore fashion as a serious and sustainable career path, and create designs that blend cultural values with modern aesthetics. Through this journey, I hope to become a bridge between cultures and use fashion as a tool for creativity, empowerment, and cultural appreciation.
