Undergraduate / JHU Supplement- Why I chose to apply as Engineering Undecided [3]
Hey I am having alot of trouble with this essay and all comments critisim and hlep is appreciated.
Johns Hopkins offers 50 majors across the schools of Arts and Sciences and Engineering. On this supplement, we ask you to identify one or two that you might like to pursue here. Why did you choose the way you did? If you are undecided, why didn't you choose? (If any past courses or academic experiences influenced your decision, you may include them in your essay.)
The term engineering has become one which is used loosely and ambiguously. The engineering field is so diverse that it is hard to classify all of the different majors that fall under this category simultaneously. From designing buildings with civil engineering, to designing chemicals with chemical engineering, there is a plethora of skills that go into each specific profession. However through my research I have found that there are a few aspects that all areas of engineering have in common: math, science, and problem solving. These three areas are things that get my blood boiling with a challenge, make my mind race with adrenaline, and give me satisfaction when I succeed. So when asked what major I wish to pursue in college I do not have an answer but I do know that I will one day find this major within the field of engineering.
To help me ensure that I am making the right decision by applying to the school of Arts and Sciences and Engineering I have gone further than simply researching online and listening to hearsay as I spoke to a few individuals who have careers as engineers. I shadowed and interviewed with Chick Gilligan who is a local civil engineer. In addition I spoke with my cousin's fiancé, Matthew Kulick, a biomedical engineer. My hope in speaking to these individuals, who work at opposite ends of the engineering field, was that I would become partial to one of these careers. Unfortunately these experiences only made me increasingly flustered. When speaking to the civil engineer, Mr. Gilligan, I was intrigued by the way he worked together with construction companies to design homes. When I spoke to the biomedical engineer, Mr. Kulick, I was amazed at how much potential there is to help the livelihood of others. It was obvious that these jobs were extremely different but I realized that with either job I would be content and would enjoy going to work each day. This showed me that I am not ready to declare what specific engineering profession I want to pursue but at the same time ensured me that engineering was what I wanted.
I learned there is no tangible factor that drove me to have an interest in engineering. It is one of those things were there is no rhyme or reason, I just know. Math and science are two things that I have a passion for, two things that I would never mind studying for, and two things that I need in my life. I can not imagine myself getting through a day without using math or science to solve a problem, without entering that realm where only the solution matters. That is why I want to study engineering, because I know that it will provide me with an environment that I will thrive in and that will provide me with the sublime. The fact that I do not know what major I will pursue to me is irrelevant because I know that I will one day find an answer in the same way which I found my passion for engineering.
