Precious based on book Push by Sapphire is viewed with positive comments from different people; they all think the movie was successful to show the life of the main character, Claireece Precious Jones.

Movie begins with Precious introducing herself, and narrating the story. Precious, who is illiterate, lives with an abusive mother. She is pregnant with a second child whom the father is also her father. From the horrible life, she believes that school is the only place she can be free from her mother. Due to her pregnancy, school sends her to alternative school called "Each one Teach one," and there she meets Ms. Rain, her girlfriend, and the classmates. She finds joy and happy in that place. After giving a birth and other incident, Precious doesn't go back to home and her mother wants Precious back into her life repenting the past, and Precious walks away.

I watched the movie first then read the book. Unlike the book, the movie wasn't as graphic as the book, and focused more on Precious rather than the entire story. When I watched the movie, I liked what director has done in the moment Precious zone out (think flow?). In the book, whenever Mary, Precious' mother, is abusing her, Precious flashbacks to her horrible past. She says that she think of her dad, but things she remembers are the "stink, the white shit drip off his dick (57)." Her flash backs are so graphic that I had to close my eyes even though I was reading; however, in the movie, instead of putting all flashbacks, the director chose to put Precious' imagination of her being famous (dream?) with a good life. I believe this showed the hope she had in her mind, whereas in the book, it showed the sad and gruesome life she is living with.

If director's choice of putting hopeful scenes was the best choice, his interpretation of the characters was the worst choice. Even after I watched the movie, when I read the book, I pictured Ms. Rain as more "Apollonian" because of the dialects of her as well as the description of her actions, but in the movie, she was skinny, tall, and very pretty woman. I also pictured her to be more aggressive and strict. It is not only her that was misinterpreted. Rita, who is described as "[the] skinny light-skin Spanish girl (44)," didn't look anything alike in the movie. Rhonda, who is "big... light-skin... ugly... fat (43)" in the book, looked nothing like her description. Even thought I watched the movie first, while I was reading, I didn't know who was who and had to watch the movie again. I felt like movie threw away the each character's thing (I don't know that word fit in here) that book had given just because the director wanted Precious to stand out that no one is fatter and uglier than she is.

The movie represents the Precious from the book. Life Berardinelli said, " For two hours, Sidible, [the actress], is Precious Jones," the movie was also Precious Jones. The movie did show the horrible past and the present, but it also showed the happiness, awakening, and joy. The movie processed as Precious had processed. (is it okay if I put the movie grew as Precious grew?)
