Undergraduate / Who You Are? (dream of being a successful businessperson) - Columbia Essay [NEW]

1. Write an essay that conveys to the reader a sense of who you are. Possible topics may include, but are not limited to, experiences that have shaped your life, the circumstances of your upbringing, your most meaningful intellectual achievement, the way you see the world-the people in it, events great and small, everyday life-or any personal theme that appeals to your imagination. Please remember that we are concerned not only with the substance of your prose but with your writing style as well. We prefer that you limit yourself to 250-500 words (1-2 pages).

Any suggestions will help...thank you...

The people that get to know us best, from our virtues to our flaws, are our parents. They have the greatest influence in our lives because they are the people we see the most and have known for the longest. They sacrifice many luxuries in order to give their children the best life possible. My father has had a tremendous impact on my life. Most acquaintances say that I am like my father, both physically and mentally. We have the same mannerisms, facial expressions, and thought processes. We both have an incredible amount of energy. We love to learn, travel and spend time with family. From observing my father's behavior and listening to his lectures, I was utterly impressed by his determination, intelligence, and moreover, perseverance.

My father was born in China. As an excellent editor, he never had any discomfort or traumatizing experiences throughout his career. My father's life changed though when he moved to the United States in 2005. Because of his low proficiency in English, he could not find an editor job in New York. It was a huge struggle for a 45-year-old man to start a new career. However, my father never lost hope and kept on working hard to improve his family's quality of life. In 2008, he passed the exam and became a real estate agent. Presently, his business is doing very well, and my family lives very comfortably. My father was able to lift our family off the ground because of his perseverance.

My father's ability to improve his family's life has inspired me to always try my hardest to get the best out of life. Thanks to him, I have more opportunities than he had at my age. I feel that if I do not take advantage of everything he has provided for me, I am being lazy and a disappointment to him. I believe that if my dad was able to achieve such a comfortable life with very little to start out with, I should be able to do the same because of all the advantages I have compared to him. For example, in my sophomore year, I was not confident of my learning ability. The reason I had such doubt is that even I made endeavors to complete my school works properly and attempted to achieve high scores, my low proficiency in English derailed my plan. I was disheartened by the discrepancy between my efforts and my report card's grades. However, his story makes me realize that there are no excuses for me not to reach my goals. My dream of being a successful businessperson will become a reality if I constantly work and fight for it. I realized that I should never give up, even if I feel my adversities can sometimes be overwhelming. Thus I kept focus on my works and I made a significant improvement in the following marking periods. Because of him, I have the fortitude to confront any difficulties that I encounter in my life.
