Petroleum +Environmental Engineering, renewable energy, project management - SOP [4]
hi all....
i have some personal statements, and i need someone to check and revise it.
i have tried my best to work on it, but since English was not my 1st language, i still not confident with my essay...I would be very thankful for those who help me :)
I will register for postgraduate program this year.
the first one is SoP to Petroleum Engineering:
Since I was a child, I have believed that energy is very important for human being. All human activities in several fields such as communication, transportation, manufacturing, or even for our daily house hold need energy. As a petroleum engineer, I will be able to contribute to meeting mankind's energy needs while safeguarding the environment. Equally satisfying, petroleum engineers also gain responsibility faster and supervise important projects sooner than those in other engineering fields. This circumstance stimulated me to attend post graduate program majoring petroleum engineering. I choose it as my program because I believe that petroleum engineering is future-oriented. Since hydrocarbons are non-renewable energy, the technology to recover hydrocarbons will be more advanced and challenging from time to time. It is the skill and knowledge that I would like to obtain from Imperial College.
Realizing that energy is very important to human have triggered my desire to study mechanical engineering in the most prestigious university in Indonesia; University of Indonesia. My interest to energy has leaded me to take "Flow Calculation of Friction Factor in Square-Noryl Duct" as my final year project. I believe that the use of Square-Noryl Duct replacing the existing aluminum as the material for solar water heater will increase the heat absorbing ability and decrease the manufacturing process of solar water heater. That will create a cheap and affordable energy to be used by wide range of people. In addition, I took an active role in the organization of Student Association of Mechanical Engineering Department and was responsible as head of car's emission check division in Mechanical Fair 2005 because of my concern on global warming caused by car's emission gas.
After graduated from University, I got an opportunity to work with a leading energy company - PT. Chevron Pacific Indonesia, A Chevron subsidiary company which scopes is producing oil and gas in Sumatera. As an employee at PT. Chevron Pacific Indonesia, I had numerous opportunities to learn more and broaden my knowledge. I took a position as a Drilling Site Manager which supervises 25 rig crews in daily drilling operations. Being Drilling Site Manager demands me to make quick analyses and decisions regarding the drilling operations. My experiences supervising various different tasks allow me to be able to work around challenging environments. Interaction with culturally diverse environment has improved my communication skills, leadership skills, and ability to work in a group environment as well as to lead and supervise subordinates.
Besides working, I am active in my neighborhood activities. It is my advantages as a Drilling Site Manager because I have 14 days off duty after my working days. My presence activity in neighborhood is having Indonesia independence celebration. I help the committee to find the best games, door prize, and catering. I love to organize event and people so they will feel happy and enjoy living in our housing complex.
I consider myself to study in Imperial College because I'm young, energetic, smart working, visionary and motivated person who believes that I can do something to benefit my country in future. Being able to identify patterns and relationships that are not obvious to others is one of my strength. This will prove very valuable because an integral part of taking Master degree is to perceive the balance between the theory and practice, analytical persistency, and intuition. My communication skills are excellent and I like expressing the ideas and concepts which are the suitable stands for the dissemination of knowledge in my chosen field of specialization.
In five years from now, I want to run consultancy business focusing in giving consultancy about enhanced recovery technology for oil and gas, how to process it more efficient and environmental friendly so people in my country can enjoy affordable energy as my country is a developing country which there is still many people live under normal economic situation.
The high reputation in having superior standards of education and the opportunity to challenge myself has motivated me on taking petroleum engineering in Imperial College. The eminent faculty and the individualized nature of the master program will definitely bring out the best for me. I would like to restate that I posses the background, the ability and the motivation to make a significant contribution to the development of my future as well as our country and our world. I do hope you will take a favorable decision regarding my admission to Petroleum Engineering program and I'm looking forward to join Imperial College soon.
the 2nd is renewable energy :
Since I was a child, I have believed that energy is very important for human being activities. We need energy for communication, transportation, manufacturing, even daily household activity. Unfortunately, we still depend on fossil energy which becoming expensive and not sustainable. Some of them can be substituted to renewable clean energy and I believe it is our future energy. In Indonesia, where the sun is abundant, wind, river and sea wave are freely available. Moreover, Indonesia also posses huge potential of geothermal energy. All of these can be converted to clean and renewable energy for our country good as well as our earth. The problem is that we do not have enough knowhow to maximize this huge potential energy.
These circumstances stimulate me to join post graduate program majoring Renewable Energy Development in Heriot-Watt University. I choose it because I have seen that Fossil energy is creating pollution, emissions related to the health issues, global warming, ecosystems damage, etc., which will impact to severity of the economic and social. I believe that more renewable energy means fewer burned fossil fuel which will result to reduced carbon emissions. My dream is maximizing renewable energy which can be processed from unlimited source, economically and environmental friendly, so everyone can take benefit of it.

the 3rd is Environmental engineering :
Pollution has been a major problem all over the world. Every process from manufacture to transportation produces pollution. Environmental engineers use their discipline to develop solutions to environmental issue, including water and air pollution control, waste disposal and public health issue. More importantly, environmental engineers are able to help others to comply with regulations, prevent environmental damage and clean up hazardous sites. These circumstances stimulate me to attend post graduate program majoring environmental engineering and business management. I choose it as my program because I have seen what pollution can do to our environment. My goal is to create a new way of pollution management so we will be able to live without problems caused by waste and also preserve the environment.

In addition, I took an active role in the organization of Student Association of Mechanical Engineering Department and was responsible as head of car's emission check division in Mechanical Fair 2005 because of my concern on global warming caused by car's emission gas. In that event, the other division presented about the impact of green house gas effect and the new way of technology to avoid that (e.g. hybrid car).

and the last one is project management :
We can find project managers in any kind of industries. Project management is one of the basic skills which are needed by the professional project managers to successfully organizing and managing a complex and dynamic project. My first interest in project management came when I had internship with PT. Astra Honda Motor, a leading motor vehicle industry in Indonesia. At that time I realize that without a good management skill, a brilliant brain means nothing. In my opinion, a good project should have a superior planning, cost estimating, progress reporting and analysis, and SMART (Specific, Measureable, Attainable, Reasonable, and Time-based) goals. From that moment I start reading books about management, but I still not satisfied. This circumstance stimulated me to attend post graduate program majoring Management of Project.
I had my degree in mechanical engineering in the most prestigious university in Indonesia; University of Indonesia. Having my final year project together with my friend is not only give me academic knowledge but also precious management skills. My final project title is "Flow Calculation of Friction Factor in Square-Noryl Duct". In order to simulate and calculate the friction factor, I had to build a model (prototype) which I consider as a big project at that moment. To finish the project in one semester, I have to manage the time and resources together with my friend. I make a timetable and progress report to control my activity; A specific target to attain everyday; Schedule to consult with my lecturer at the end of the week; Analysis of failure; and a book of cost expenditure.

Besides working, I am active in my neighborhood activities. It is my advantages as a Drilling Site Manager because I have 14 days off duty after my working days. My presence activity in neighborhood is having Indonesia independence celebration. I help the committee to find the best games, door prize, and catering.
