SOP for English literature (Graduate, literary studies) [4]
Please provide your feedback on my SOP.First I would like to introduce myself as an undergraduate student of the bachelor of English literature from University of Isfahan one of the most prestigious universities in Iran.
Majored in literary studies as an undergraduate, I would now like to concentrate on English and Irish literature.I am especially interested in nineteenth and early twentieth-century novel, Victorian and naturalist poetry and English Renaissance theatre . Most of my personal literary projects have involved some combination of these subjects. As a part of my drama course I wrote an essay on Shakespeare's King Lear measuring it against the Aristotelian criteria for a tragedy. I also wrote an analysis of Thomas Hardy's Tess of the D'Urbervilles focusing on the element of "Religious hypocrisy". I'm very hopeful to continue writing literary criticism on novels and be able to improve my papers so that I may be able to write one worthy of publication.
In my studies toward a master's degree, I hope to approach nineteenth-century literature more intently. My senior year and independent studies of Victorian literature led me to consider the comparison of significance of nature and natural elements between romantic and naturalist poetry and novel.
Shall I attend your university, I incline to resume my studies of Romantic and naturalist literature focusing on their natural elements.
Writing is also an important aspect of my academic and hopefully professional aims. I have recently started writing a novel with fantastic elements within an epic theme that reflects my own country's folk mythology. My writing is influenced by my favourite authors' styles and tends to draw from my university studies. Additionally a large sum of my everyday experience especially with nature finds its way into my writing subtly. On another note I try to practice my literary knowledge by applying the devices used by other writers to my own work.
Career wise I see myself as one to write novels and literary criticism. Graduate studies can drastically help me on my way to reaching my academic and career goals. Earning a Master's in English literature with specialisation in either English or Irish literature will help me significantly to achieve
My career targets by improving my skills in writing literary works and criticism. Further, since I don't see the Master's degree as an ultimate academic goal, I consider it a platform to higher levels of Education i.e. PhD. I take much value in studying literature for its own sake and willing to carry on my studies according to the standards demanded by the graduate programme.
