Undergraduate / "the development of impoverished nations around the world" -Peace Corps Essay [2]

Essay Question: "Peace Corps service presents major physical, emotional, and intellectual challenges. You have provided information on how you qualify for Peace Corps service elsewhere in the application. In the space below, please provide a statement (between 250 - 500 words) that includes:

Your reasons for wanting to serve as a Peace Corps Volunteer; and
How these reasons are related to your past experiences and life goals.
How you expect to satisfy the Peace Corps 10 Core Expectations (please be specific about which expectations you expect to find most challenging and how you plan to overcome these challenges)."

My Essay:

In my years as a student of political science, I have focused the majority of my classes in learning about the development of impoverished nations around the world. Since returning from living in Germany in 2006, I have had a drive to learn more about different cultures around the world. My interest in learning more about different cultures fueled my desire to move to an underdeveloped country post graduation and not only to submerge myself in that culture, but also give back to the community in which I will live. After doing extensive research on the goals of the Peace Corps, I knew without a doubt that this is exactly what I would like to do with my life after I graduate. In 2008, I worked on the Obama campaign where I was able to see the effectiveness of working on a major project at the grassroots level. The Peace Corps works in a similar manner and it is something I am very drawn to. The hands-on approach of the Peace Corps parallels directly with what I am determined to do with my life. Having the opportunity to integrate myself into a community elsewhere in the world via the Peace Corps is a great way for me to learn about the local cultures and traditions of a country while giving back to the community the things that I have learned and experienced in my lifetime.

Having lived in both Germany and France, I have had the pleasure of experiencing the cultural differences between both of these countries and my own. Living in these countries has also taught me that no matter how prepared or adaptable I think I am, there are always going to be difficulties I am going to have to overcome when moving to a different country. That being said, I absolutely love the feeling of submergence into another culture. In my experience, what I learn about local traditions and cultures by means of submergence far outweighs the initial difficulties experienced when arriving in a foreign country. Though I have had the honor of living and traveling extensively throughout Europe, I am now seeking to live somewhere that will challenge me under harder circumstances and living conditions. I am versatile and look forward to the opportunity to bring what I have learned in my life to a community for the purpose of bettering others lives in exchange for acquiring knowledge and information about another culture.
