College In My Thirties
After I graduated high school I had no intentions of spending another two to four years in school. I was content to have graduated high school and wanted to "enjoy life" and get out on my own. I never really liked school when I was younger. What I did take pleasure in is being with friends and going out. I got married at nineteen and started my family. Again college was far from my mind; I had small children to take care of. When I reached my 30's I longed for that education I had put off time and time again. Well here I am starting college at age 35 and I do believe that it has lots of positive aspects. I now know what I enjoy and don't enjoy. I have the work experience and life lessons to make that decision. I now am more driven and focused on my education. Personal satisfaction of being able to get in a field of my choice, not just because it's a job.
I have been in many different job settings. I have worked in fast food restaurants, a mechanic shop and in the pharmaceutical industry. What I have learned is that I love to interact and help people. I do not like a job that is not stimulating and thought provoking. I desire challenges that will keep me on my toes. I know that I can't go back to those jobs it was mentally wearing me out because they were not exciting and challenging enough. Without the experience if I had gone to college after high school I might have chosen the wrong career path.
At this time in my life I am more driven and focused or maybe a little stubborn. When I was young I had no interest in extending my education. I probably would have enrolled just to drop out because I had no drive or ambition. Being in my 30's I now know that this education is the future for me and my family, whereas before I was blind-sided by the thrill of being young and making it on my own. Life beyond my teens has taught me a lot about what should be important in my life.
Today I am my children' role-model. I am making a change to practice what I preach. I would tell my children education is everything. Knowing that I did not attend college my children would always say "why do I have to go if you didn't, you make good money without college." I always answered this with a question "why have a job you do not enjoy and look forward to and how long do you think you stand to work there?" The personal satisfaction of having a job I love is my main reason I am attending school. I want to show my children that it's never too late to make changes in life.
It has taken me eighteen years to attend college but I do not regret it, instead I am embracing it. I know what I want to do and I'm going for it. "Better late than never." My drive and focus is better now than it ever has been. I am going to make myself proud and enjoy the rest of my life in a career I love.
