"There is no education like adversity" said,Benjamin Disraeli. In life people face challenges and obstacles that sculpt who they become. In the short story 'The Sniper' by Liam O'Flaherty, you are introduced to a nameless character "the sniper", who through a civil war in Ireland, learns some of life's valuable lessons.

At the beginning of the story the sniper is described as a thin, ascetic student, who in his eyes had the cold gleam of a fanatic." The eyes of a man who is used to looking at death." As the story further develops, the sniper kills a soldier and on informant. By doing so the sniper exposes himself to an opposing sniper, that ends up wounding him. The wounded sniper tricks the opposing sniper into thinking that he is dead. The opposing sniper reveals himself and ends up being killed by the sniper. Through all the opposition the sniper had to deal with, he loses the will for war and becomes remorseful. "The lust of battle died in him."The sniper cursed the war, himself, and everbody. Do to sudden curiosity , before leaving the sniper decides to see who the opposing sniper was, as he turned the body over he "looked into his brother's face." The lesson to be learned is that there is no real winners in war, and by fighting for you belief you could harm somebody you love.

Reading the story had made me think of how adversity has changed me ....
