UC prompt 2: tell us a personal quality, talent, accomplishment, contribution or experience that is important to you. What about this quality or accomplishment makes you proud and how does it relate to the person you are?

I lay my head on the train's cold frosty window and close my eyes. In about thirty minutes I will be walking through the doors of the Aquarium of the Pacific in Long Beach and proudly wear my 'educational volunteer name tag'. Even though it takes a bus, a train and plenty of will power to get to this place, I do it because it is an oasis where I can forget worries, home and school and live in the moment. The person I have to thank for my passionate dedication to the aquarium is my father who I have not seen in years.
When my father was an active member in my life, my world felt as if no gravity existed; it had no stability. It was filled with promises that the wind would carry away and bring back unfulfilled. He first would sign me up for tennis, and karate lessons. Then he would promise he would pay for them and take me to and fro from those classes, but after one or two lessons my father would leave and return months or even years later. My lessons, would always be put on halt because of 'work matters'. As I grew older, I realize and promise myself that if I ever wanted something with all my heart, I was not going to depend on anyone and find a way to get it done.
Becoming part of the Aquarium of the Pacific is something that my heart wants. I do not depend on anyone to get there. It may be 30 miles away from home, but I learn different ways to arrive there on time. I am proud of being self-sufficient because it has enable me to create everlasting friendships on the bus, train and aquarium.
