Essay for the admission in Master of Science in Applied Earth Sciences.

To whom it may concern:

Nowadays, with Bachelor degree it is just not enough in today's competitive world. An arsenal of higher degree and experience are needed at the same time.

I am writing to you to submit an application of admission for the Master's Degree Programme in Applied Earth Sciences at the Delft University of Technology with the MS track of Resource Engineering in which I am particularly interested.

I am a fifth and last year student of the Geology and Mining department of the Anton de Kom University of Suriname in Mineral Resource Management. I have always found it exciting to know how materials are formed, extracted, processed and recycled throughout different process. This study has given me a great perspective how important the mineral resource is. Almost everything we use in the daily life is made out of the material extracted from the mineral resource. There will be a day where the mineral resource will become depleted. Therefore, it is important for me to know how to extract and process the mineral resource efficiently by gaining more knowledge and experience by studying further.

I have done my internship at a mid-scale pilot gold plant of a Surinamese company, xxxxxx. Having been immersed in to the field of mining and mineral processing, I have seen how important experience and knowledge is to run a gold plant. Foreign multinationals are profiting largely and mostly from the mineral resource in Suriname, because they got the technology and knowledge. A group of local miners is mining inefficiently. There is also a group of small-scale miners that is mining with a bad mining method, where it has bad consequences for the environment, namely with mercury. My plan is to study further to gain a deeper theoretical knowledge and experience. After studying I plan to give useful consult and good contribution to the mining industry in Suriname or even run an own mining plant.

I choose to pursue this Master programme abroad, because in my country Suriname, this master programme is not available and I am eager to learn and gain a lot of knowledge and experience in the mining business. The reason why I choose to pursue this master programme in particular in the Netherlands is, because The Netherlands has good remarkable bilateral relation with my country Suriname and was one of the active countries that were constantly helping us with developing aid. The Netherlands is a country of high-tech and is still developing in high technology. To study in the Netherlands also give me the opportunity to learn more about the Netherlands cultures. Dutch, the official language of Suriname and the Netherlands, is spoken mainly in both countries, I can see myself fit in easily into the Dutch community, because I come from a multicultural country and The Dutch people are well known for being friendly and tolerant.

When I was researching for a University, I found out that Delft University of technology is among the world best 15 universities of technology (THES, 2009) and it leads the way in research into technological innovations. Students from TU Delft have been responsible for highly impressive projects, which I wanted to be part of too. Tudelft is offering a very challenging master programme in Earth Applied Sciences with the MS track: Resource Engineering, which I am particularly very interested. This programme is about the total materials cycle, from mining and mineral processing to extractive metallurgy and recycling, which can give me continuation of my learning process and my goal. The Resource Engineering M.Sc. is offered through a joint programme run by TU Delft and the following five other universities in Europe: Aachen, Delft, Exeter, Helsinki, Miskolc or Wroclaw. This will give me an insight in the different cultures and international experiences. Studying in different European countries also give me the opportunity to meet and work with professionals from various backgrounds and gather knowledge on a wide range of issues involved, I will also get a comprehensive EU perspective on mining and geotechnical related issues. This will help me as well to develop a coherent and integrated approach that is applicable to a more global perspective. In addition, the most important point of view is that I believe that Tudelft would give every kind of student from different country the same opportunity to study at their University.

There are two specializations, which interest me the most. I would like to specialize in Mining or Mineral Engineering.
Specializing in Mining Engineering will provide me a deeper knowledge to locate, quantify and produce mineral resources in an economical, sustainable and environmental friendly manner. It also teach me to take some important parameters in consideration such as stripping, dewatering, (slope, pit etc.) design and choosing the right mining equipments for the mine operation. If some of these parameters are not taken seriously under consideration, the mine can collapse and people (mine-workers) life could be in danger. In other phrase, specializing in Mining Engineering would give me the knowledge to know how to set up a mine plan and/or run a mine operation. As I stated before someday I would like to run my own mining plant. I would also get deeper education in the different mining techniques, where I can see which method is the best suitable for the Surinamese mining ground.

Second choice of the specialization that I wanted to do is the Mineral Engineering.
Having done a bachelor graduation thesis about mineral processing at a gold pilot plant, I have seen that the gold plant is not a fully optimized operation and the intended metals are not efficiently and highly recovered from the primary raw material by the equipments that are used for the recovery. The performance of the recovery equipments were not fully been utilized. The cause was that the operational and physical parameters were not seriously taken under consideration. This is due to the lack of experience and knowledge of the mill operators of the company. It is a waste of mineral resource since there is a scarcity of some of the resources. Specializing in Mineral Engineering would give me expertise in the separation and recovery of minerals and metals from their ores.

I am particularly interested in the following three Master's thesis topics:
1. Excavation- Drill and Blast
2. Mining Economics
3. Mineral Economics

Drill and Blast is a master's thesis topic that interests me the most. Drill and Blast means loosening of the hard surface rock by the use of explosives that are applied in the drilled holes. The explosives in the individual holes are detonated in a preset sequential order. Blasting has an important impact on mining and milling well beyond the necessary ability to dig and load the ore efficiently. Optimum fragmentation is better suited to the crushing and grinding system which lead to the reduction of energy consumption by these activities, which is an very important issue in today's environment. Reduce of energy consumption also means the reduction of the energy cost. This topic will give me good understanding on how explosives work and react on the different materials and helping the company to reduce their milling and blasting cost.

Mining Economics will let me apply my theoretical skills acquired from the economical projects, different feasibility studies, mining production planning parameters, strategic planning, financing
and management to real practice. Making an engineering decision based on cost will be a lot easier. It will get me deeper knowledge in analyzing the mining economic issues and it would help to make better negotiation deals with foreign firms for my country. It has been found that developing countries hold a large percentage of the world's mineral reserves and one could infer that there is a large potential to further establishing the mining industry in these regions. A government with limited experience in negotiating mineral agreements has a distinct disadvantage in the bargaining process with the foreign firms. The foreign firm has a stronger bargaining power when it is considering investing in a developing nation and developing a mineral deposit. This is due their wealth, knowledge and experience. This study will also provide me the knowledge to calculate and make a decision if it is feasible to run an own mining plant. Mineral Economics is the study of the business and economic aspects of natural resource extraction and use. Mineral economics involves studying topics in economic and financial analysis that are developed to meet the special needs of the natural resource industries. Calculating, financial and economic topics were always my favorite subjects at school. This study will provide me the ability to evaluate mineral projects and operations by calculating and comparing the economical parameters of projects and operations.

As mentioned before I had done my graduation thesis at a mid-scale gravity recoverable gold pilot plant at xxxxx. The company works with a hammer mill, three centrifugal concentrators (two of twenty inch and one of thirty inch in diameter) and a ball mill. The main purpose why this project went forth was because the company wants to increase the efficiency and gold recovery. First, the ore comes in the hammer mill and afterwards it is fed to the two twenty inch centrifugal concentrators. The outflow of these concentrators enters the ball mill where the particles are being milled to finer particles. This material enters the thirty-inch concentrator. The outflow of the thirty-inch concentrator will go directly to the tailing. Every equipment was researched individually except the ball mill and the big concentrator; this was because of their difficult or impossible accessibility.

Samples were taken from the output of the hammer mill for the analyzing of the particle distribution. Samples were also taken from the input of the hammer mill and at the outflow of the thirty-inch concentrator at the same time for gold analyze. The recovery was calculated by the output divided by the input grade. Test were done to optimize the efficiency and recovery of the two small concentrators by researching for the optimum operating water pressure. Each day de pressure is increased by two psi in the range of 10-20 psi. the optimum was found between 16-18psi. This thesis project is worth twenty ect points.

I know I have made the right choice for this master programme and I am very eager to join. Therefore, I would like to request you to grant me this opportunity to complete my Master of Science in Applied Earth Sciences with the Msc track: Resource Engineering.

Thank you for your time and consideration.

Regards,
xxxxxxxx
