Scholarship / a photo / favorite saying / hometown / influence - UWC scholarship [NEW]

Hi guys. My name is Huong Pham and I am from Vietnam. Now I am applying to UWC scholarship and I have to write 3 essays. Please read them and give me some comment :). thanks so much

Please write a statement of not more than 300 words explaining why you are interested in
attending a United World College, describing both what you might contribute to the College
and what you would hope to gain from your experience there.

It seems like a joke but trust me, my love with Pearson College originated from a photo which was taken from the floating building. Although this scene is from a faraway country, whenever I see this photo, I feel something familiar. Not only do the enormous space of sea and sky, the foggy lake surface with trees on two sides strongly impress me but they also remind me of my hometown, a maritime place. Whenever I go to the sea, I find my soul peaceful. At the first time I have seen the photo of Pearson, this feeling came back and always so. Additionally, Pearson College is situated on an unique location - on the ocean and near the forest, which is convenient to learn more about surrounding environment. It is the other factor that make I love Pearson and, moreover, one of things that I want to gain from this college. 2 years are not a long time, but will be enough for me to improve my knowledge about and responsibility for environment, as well as learn how to protect natural world. My hometown, as I have said, is also a marine place, which has famous Halong Bay but a lot of environmental problems. I hope that I can apply my understanding to better awareness of people around me and contribute to protecting environment process

In UWCs, each college is a big family, and I am willing to do some things to contribute to my second home. I love dance; I have participated in aerobics club for 3 years and have had some dance performances. So, I will continue to pursuing my passion in Pearson - joining the dance club and dancing performances. I may not be the best member, but I will definitely be an active and enthusiastic one.

(i have some trouble with the conclusion. should I end here?)

Essay 1: Please write an essay of not more than 200 words about your most favourite saying and
explain why you like it.

"My old hometown" is one of the best writings of Lu Hsun - a famous Chinese writer. The story describes honestly social changes at that time and how they spoilt people's personalities. However, it also expresses the author's faith in appearance of a new and better society by the image of roads in the end: "For actually the earth had no roads to begin with, but when many men pass one way, a road is made." Under any circumstances, in the story or in real life, in the past, now or in the future, Lu Hsun's statement remains valuable. It is a philosophy about people's lifetime, which encourages us to try our best and excert ourselves continually: Only when we have strong determination, be proactive and persevere despites difficulties are we building roads which lead to freedom, happiness and success. Additionally, what we should do is strive for new and better things, instead of depending on available ones. Future is ahead and maybe faraway, it will surely come however, like the universal truth about the formation of roads on the earth, as long as we have hope and resolution.

Essay 2: Please write an essay of not more than 200 words the most important factor or person that

influenced your education or formation of your characters.

Obviously success makes us happy, but also easily satisfied. Consequently, I very much appreciate failure in fact, because it is a motivation which makes me improve myself continually.

5 years ago, I got bad marks and almost failed to get into the gifted class at the junior high school. I had thought that "I am a good student and I can do even hard question" so I had spent almost my summer on relaxing instead of reviewing knowledge. Then, I learned a big lesson about harm of laziness, overconfidence, and tried to work hard to keep pace with my talented classmates.

Another experience happened when I participated in Town Competition for Excellent grade-9 students. I only won the 3rd prizes whereas some of my friends achieved higher results. I looked back on myself once more from this failure and realized my shortcoming was not reviewing exercises as well as reading more documentaries. I, therefore, had to study harder and more effective. As a result, in the final round, I got the highest marks among students in town and won the 2nd prize.

To sum up, I have got a lot of valuable things from failures, and I consider it as a factor that influenced my characters' formation: be confident but not arrogrant, work hard and effective and always exert myself to success.
