Undergraduate / About my Mother - Describe a woman you admire and who has influenced your life. [3]

The person that has influenced my life is my mother because she is the one person that has always stood by my side, and always she encourageshas always encouraged me to be the reach my full potential. My mother came from a different country not knowing a single word in English, not knowing anyone. She came for a better living, and future.

In Mexico, my mother was never able to go to school like most children did , because she was one of the oldest out of eleven children. While others were in class learning their abc's my mother was out in the ranch feeding the animals, planting seeds, or helping my grandmother with her younger siblings. As my mother became older the chances for her being able to go to school grew smaller due to economical reasons. Therefore, she never got the opportunity to learn how to read and write in school like most people did, instead, she had to learn it all on her own. My mother, like many other people, migrated to the United States of America for a better living opportunity. (My mother did not know any English) You already said this. Try stating it differently and moved to this country knowing only but a few words, such as "yes" "no" and "sorry". Can you imagine leaving your life behind; your family, your home, your job, and moving to a new country? To a place you know little about and trying to call it home. Hoping to somehow make a living out of a society which language you do not understand. (complete the sentence )

My mother came from Mexico to the United States as an illegal immigrant by crossing the dangerous river. Just by That shows courage, and persistence, especially knowing that she could have had lost her life along the way. She still took the risk into coming in to the United States because she knew she would have a better life . It took time and practice for my mother to learn enough English to get a stable job. My mother went from being a school cafeteria lady, cleaning houses, to working as housekeeping for hotels, and now, finally, having her independent business, Amway incorporated.

My mother has always provided me and my brothers the best educational opportunities that there could be, she has always pushed and strived for me to get all that I should and more. I admire my mother because she is a strong woman to have the courage to come to the United States not knowing if she would fail or succeed in a new a country. My mother has always had a big heart in caring for others, such as she's taken care of many of her family members, such as her nieces, nephews, sisters, brothers, and now currently taking care of her ill mother, while also raising her own family.

My mother has influenced my life because she shows determination and perseverance, and has encouraged me into doing all that I can which is going to school to finish my Bachelor's in Social Work to help others just as my mother has helped many people. My mother has sacrificed so much to come to this country and worked so hard to finally be here legally so that one day she can see me cross the stage of my college graduation and receive my degree like she and I have always dreamed of.

Scholarship / "either major or minor in music education" - Performing Arts Booster Scholarship [2]

Essay Question: Please explain the value of your involvement in the performing arts program as SJHHS and what you have gained through the experience. As well as how you will apply that knowledge in the future.

Thank you for your help!

"Love is like a violin. The music may stop now and then, but the strings remain forever." My love for music started when I was three years old, and after many obstacles my "strings" remain intact. I had my first opportunity to participate in a music program when I was in elementary school. There I auditioned for the CUSD Honor Orchestra and participated in the concerts. My love for music had just begun and I wanted to strengthen it. At MFMS I joined the orchestra and participated in the CUSD Honor Orchestra in both sixth and seventh. Seventh grade I moved up to the Advanced Orchestra. In eighth grade I was first chair first violin, which is the highest seat one can obtain. While I was in seventh and eighth grade I took opera classes outside of school to expand my musical knowlegde. After middle school I was afraid to continue with music, especially at SJHHS because there was no established music program. I was willing to take the risk, and help establish it. That is exactly what I did Freshman year, and I participated again in the CUSD Honor Orchestra, once again for my fifth year. I did not know that my last year in orchestra would be my sophomore year. When I tried to join orchestra junior year I faced schedule conflicts and had to drop the class. However, like my quote says "The music may stop now and then, but the strings remain forever," my love for music remained strong. I knew I had to continue in the performing arts program but I didn't know what to do. Choir was one of my options, but I had never sung in a choir before. I was scared, but once I started I didn't want to stop. Senior year came and I was excited to join orchestra once more. Sadly my schedule conflicts still existed, and I was unable to join. So I went back to choir, it's not that I didn't want to do it, but orchestra is what I would have preferred to do. I would do both if I could. This year I started off in the Mixed Choir, and I am now a member of the Chamber Choir. This year I was part of the CUSD Honor Choir Concert. I have been very involved in choir this year and I was given the Spirit of the Stallion award from Mr. De La Cruz. I will continue to work hard in both choirs this year.

Outside of school I am in a mariachi band. After my third audition I still remain section leader of the group. It is a very time consuming after school activity due to practices and performances.

In my near future I plan to either major or minor in music education. I want to teach other students what I know about music. Music will not benefit anyone if I don't share what I know. I want to share my love for music with others whether it be instrumental or vocal.
