Undergraduate / "to Open my own practice in Gainesville" - significant event [2]

In the space provided, please write a concise narrative in which you describe a meaningful event, experience or accomplishment in your life and how it will affect your college experience or your contribution to the UF campus community. You may want to reflect on your ideas about student responsibility, academic integrity, campus citizenship or a call to service.

Nothing is more terrifying then receiving what you think is going to be the normal call from your mom; the one that every teenager gets and second guessing on answering, only to find out this time she was not trying to keep tabs on the current location, she was calling to inform you that your grandmother is being rushed to the hospital. That's when the fear hits you, like a thousand pound weight against your heart, shattering it into a million tiny pieces.

It had never dawned on me until that heart wrenching moment just how much I idolized my grandmother. From day one she was the mediator between my parents and I, whether it be on dessert or an argument of importance, she was always someone I could count on. She was that way with the whole family... the glue that held us all together. Without her, family functions would not be as frequent and small quarrels would not be looked over. She was strong, never had she let a problem be shown to the public. If she were to become sick, no one was aware until after she was no longer ill and it slipped out in conversation. That is what made this much harder to deal with. My grandmother was lying vulnerable on a cold board, with tubes sticking out of her defenseless arms. She had suffered a stroke and temporarily lost the ability to communicate. I will never forget the tears filling her eyes as I walked into the hospital room. She opened her mouth but nothing was heard, not even the slightest form of a noise filled the air. This went on for days. A speech pathologist was assigned to her through the hospital. She came in once a day to check on my grandmother, doing exercises to help her gain communication back. Seeing the impact this was making on my grandmothers life inspired me to do the same in another person's; that epiphany of knowing just what you want to do for the rest of your life.

Working daily along side children, adults and senior citizens who suffer from a speech impediment has become a priority of mine. Communication is essential to a happy life and One day I plan to Open my own practice in Gainesville or work diligently along side the best at Shands hospital to ensure that everyone has a chance to that bliss. ( I dont know how to finish it)
