Graduate / "building relationships with my patients" - PTCAS Essay 2011 [2]
Hi everyone, this is my essay for entry into the DPT program through the PTCAS. I know it still needs some work, but I would appreciate any help given.
Which personal characteristics and motivating factors have led you to pursue the profession of physical therapy?
Coming into college I was not absolutely confident that Physical Therapy was the career path I wanted to go down. I decided to study Exercise Physiology knowing it would give me many options after completing my degree. I can honestly say that I became fully committed to pursuing a career in Physical Therapy after my first volunteer experience. My decision was only strengthened as I accumulated more volunteer hours at various settings. These hours allowed me to see aspects of the career I was not able to fully understand by looking on various Physical Therapy websites. I learned how much not only is a therapist able to impact his patients, but the patients are able to impact the therapist. My first volunteer experience was with Jason Williamson at Huntington Internal Medical Group, and he greatly influenced my decision to pursue this career. He showed such care with his patients and the appreciation they felt for him was very visible. After witnessing this I want to strive to provide the level of care and pride he had for his profession.
I have realized there are many characteristics necessary to be a good physical therapist. One must be empathetic with their patients, able to socialize well, a good teacher as well as a good listener, committed, and patient. I found that all of these traits fit my personality very well. I am able to actually visualize myself as a successful Physical Therapist in the future whereas other careers I have considered have not seemed to suit me as well. I am motivated to help others and have an impact on their lives. I feel that thorough Physical Therapy I am able to do this while leading a fulfilling, interesting, and challenging career.
Not only were my volunteer experiences motivating factors for me to pursue a career in Physical Therapy, my college courses have also provided motivation. Courses such as anatomy, physiology, kinesiology, and exercise physiology have granted me with an appreciation for the human body and how it works. I am able to apply what I learn in my undergraduate courses to supplement what I learn during observation and volunteer hours. While I have learned a lot during my undergrad, I know there is so much more to learn during graduate school and throughout my career. I am very driven to gain a greater breadth of knowledge into the field of Physical Therapy.
Physical Therapy will provide me with a fulfilling, challenging, and exciting career. I look forward to building relationships with my patients, gaining a mastery for the profession, and having a career that I will be proud of.
