Undergraduate / USC Personal Statement-Oh Brother [NEW]
Hello, I need help! Does this sound decent enough to turn in?
Indicate a person who has had a significant influence on you, and describe that influence.
One of the biggest hardships I have endured is the loss of my home. Since I was born, my dad struggled with an addiction that would contribute to the loss of our house in 2010: gambling. My father's gambling addiction made it difficult for me to trust others as my father committed these "silent crimes" against his own family. When everything around me seemed bleak, I put my faith in Jesus knowing that He would bring me out of this trial.
The person that ended up being the anchor of our family was my older brother: Derek. Towards the middle of the foreclosure process, my father ended up leaving because of his unfounded frustrations with my mom. With no father figure around, my brother consoled our remaining household while commuting back and forth from his school in Los Angeles. While the physical distance between us widened, my personal relationship with him got stronger. Though he is not the most affectionate person I know, he showed his affection through personal encouragements during these tough times. His advice yielded results in my life because they were centered around discipline, diligence, and dedication. He pushed me to think outside of the box and to be ambitious; regardless of my age. This inspired me to start my own business centered around my passion: fashion.
Hardly a fashionista himself, Derek advised on the operations aspect of my business. Because of my lack of exposure to how a business operates, my brother laid out a business model in which I improvised and developed a business plan of my own. I used this plan to get a loan from my brother to start up my venture in producing scarves. While many would think that scarves are only in style during the fall and winter, a flowing scarf for spring and summer make the scarf a season-friendly garment. I mapped out the costs of each unit of scarf, calculated the time it would take for me to make the scarf, and estimated the time it took to sell a scarf. (instead) I managed my cost and time in making each scarf unique and marketable. His strict guidelines for me to take out a loan helped me practice the characteristics my brother follows himself: discipline, diligence, and dedication for my work. A month after my brother gave me the loan, I now have a sewing machine to increase my productivity in producing scarves, a net profit of $150, an inventory of fabric to produce scarves, and backed-orders that need to be fulfilled by Christmas.
Branching off that, Derek's commitment for my own well-being empowered me to incur an experience that allowed me to be successful in my ambition. He brought a chance and opportunity, into my life, to create and pursue my dreams into reality.
