Undergraduate / St. Olaf Essay: Design a course of your own [2]

During Interim, students pursue a single course, often of an interdisciplinary nature. If you could design your own Interim course today, what would it be? What areas of knowledge would you combine? (250-500) (The Interim in St. Olaf is a four-week period of intensive study in one area. Interim provides an opportunity to focus students' entire attention on one course for a full month, to offer a time of study in depth.)
The ideal Interim course that I would design would be the one about Determination. "Genius is 1% talent and 99% percent hard work". Many people, though talented, achieved nothing significant because they don't spend enough efforts on their plans. In my opinion, if everyone on this world had been determined and worked hard, humanity could have gone much further than today. That is the reason why I want to acquire the in-depth knowledge about resolution and help improve the community by sharing it. The course would be a combination of Neurology, Psychology, Sociology and Philosophy.
Firstly, since determination is a mental concept, the study of which must involve psychology. With the knowledge learned from psychology, I will be able to have a closer look on the psychological elements that affect one's dedication to his work such as perception, cognition, attention, unconscious mind, and eventually come up with a method to strengthen the will.
Every behavior or thought of ours are controlled by the nervous system. That fact makes Neurology indispensable in this study. By understanding the connection between the nervous system and determination, I will continue researching about the possibility that science can actually influence the ability to stay undaunted.
The next field to be considered is sociology. We all live in a society where certain factors of it can affect our decisions. For example, there was a person with an intention to go to his friend's birthday party. Then he decided not to because of his mother was sick, or his boss was unhappy, or something else. Via sociology, I want to analyze the relationships between social factors such as family, friends, work and determination. The help of philosophy will also be needed here for its systematic approach and rational argument.
A course like this will not only help my future career in the psychology field, but also will instantly provide me with the self-motivation ability. I am really looking forward to its realization during my years in St. Olaf.
