Undergraduate / Why choose nursing as a career? - nursingcas personal statment [3]

I have an idea of where I can improve on in this essay, but I want to gather feedback first before I make changes. Thank you very much :)

Prompt: Why did you choose nursing as a career?

I walked through the entrance of xxxxx and took the elevator to the sixth floor of the building. When I arrived, my supervisor gave me a tour of the nursing home and informed me of the various tasks of a therapeutic recreationist. As I looked around, my focus shifted to the residents; some of them were quietly eating their breakfast, others were making small talk with each other, and a few of them were giving me curious apprehensive looks. I never worked with the elderlies before and the prospect of disappointing them made me uneasy. Once the tour ended, my supervisor paired me up with two other volunteers and we set off to motivate and engage the residents in morning exercises. The program went smoother than I expected; most residents fed off our exuberant energy and words of encouragement and any language barriers were shattered by our combined language repertoire. The rest of the day passed by in a similar fashion and before I knew it, the day ended. As days passed, I grew more comfortable with the residents and my relationship with them strengthened. They indulged me with secrets and stories of their personal lives, reminded me of important life lessons, and inquired me about my daily activities. I was never able to forge such a relationship with my grandparents so these connections were particularly meaningful to me. I also interacted with many members of the nursing staff, from the certified nursing aides to the licensed practical nurses to the registered nurses. Through them, I was able to learn some of the various skills and equipment they employed to care for the residents. Over the next couple of years, I continued my internship at xxxx, volunteered bbbb, and eventually got a job at and cccc. The culmination of these experiences is my inspiration for pursuing a career in nursing.

Throughout my healthcare experiences, I felt a sense of pride and fulfillment in being able to brighten the lives of these people. I admired and respected the work that nurses do to care for people and often wished to be in their shoes, equipped with the knowledge and skills to heal and restore their quality of life. I established and reinforced certain skills that are important as a nurse such as maintaining a stable and trusting relationship with patients and staff, communicating the needs of patients to the appropriate members, and working diligently with others as a team to accomplish the goals for the day. I was always one to put others ahead of myself to help them and I believe that the skills I will acquire as a nurse will further this ambition. I understand that the roles of a nurse can be hectic and challenging, but I am willing to put forth the work to reach that point.
