Graduate / "Ready to Go" ; Speech Language Pathology personal statement [3]
Thank you Dumi. It was a bit rough. LOL I've fixed it. Here it is..
PrĂŞt Ă partir; roughly translated in English means "ready to go" which is a phrase my grandfather often asked before we went out together. One of my first memories is sitting in the back of my grandfather's car as he boasted of old war stories about protesting against the Tonton Macounte, the dictatorial political regime in Haiti. He recounted stories about him courageously fleeing to Cuba to escape imprisonment. It's this same persistence that drove my grandfather to the United States for a better life. He was a gladiator who effortlessly lit up a room with his broken English mixed with his melodic French. However, now this great man had succumbed to a new enemy named dementia.
Over the years my grandfather began to forget his elaborate stories. His mellifluous speech slowly waned and became jarred and staccato then finally nonverbal. Step-by-step his speech-language pathologist, Lydia, aided my grandfather as his health deteriorated. Due to frequent hospital visits, we often saw her and as a teen I had the honor in witnessing one of his tests for swallowing function. I remember her gently holding his frail frame as she took tests and her compassion as she discussed her findings with our family. Although my grandfather's communicative state was impaired, his interactions with Lydia cemented my decision to become a speech-language pathologist.
The inspiration to become a speech-language pathologist is not only rooted in my personal life but from volunteer work and academia as well. After Haiti's devastating earthquake I had the opportunity to volunteer with several new Haitian refugees who moved to the United States. Being involved was personally gratifying but it presented me an opportunity to show compassion towards those in life changing transitions.
I am attracted to _____ Speech-Language Pathology graduate program due to its extraordinary academic, clinical and highly regarded training opportunities. I am intrigued by Dr. ___ Behavioral Speech and Genetics Lab because I believe having a strong foundation in scientific research advances work among patient treatment. In addition, given my family history; I am interested in the genetic link between cognitive impairments and dementia. In addition, I will be volunteering with families who have varying genetic mutation in particular with Fragile-X associated disorders in May. I have previous hands-on experience working with clients who had a variety of disorders in the ______ such as fluency, communicative, and those using an Augmentative Alternative Communication (AAC) device. My volunteer experience with _____ has given me an opportunity to lead therapy sessions with adolescents with a range of Autism Spectrum Disorders. I am drawn to working within various placement opportunities and servicing a multicultural and diverse population. As a graduate student, I look forward to continuing with this strong and supportive program which meshes well with emphasis on community work and effective patient treatment and assessment. I am especially excited to work within the Speech Therapy and Education Program for Stroke Survivors (STEPSS) clinic because I will continue to explore my fascination for working with individuals with varying neurogenic communication disorders.
I believe my drive and collaborative nature combined with my multitasking capabilities would make me an ideal candidate for ________s Speech-Language Pathology master's program. I also believe the programs faculty to student ratio will provide positive mentoring and individualized instruction. I consider my persistence my greatest asset and although I have faced many obstacles in my life, I have not wavered in my academic and professional development. I understand graduate school will be challenging and I will not take this this challenge lightly. I am confident that the ________ Speech-Language Pathology Department will serve as an ideal platform for me to grow both academically and as a future clinician. "Je suis prĂŞt" - I am ready. Thank you for your consideration.
