I think you need to emphasize whether the pond you are in currently is competitive. For instance, at some school Math Counts is by teacher recommendation only because of the size of the school and the quality of student. The kids picked are top notch. At other schools, you just sign up. If you are in the first category, state it.
Also, same thing with music. Making all district in middle or high school is considered outstanding...biggest honor in each region. If you made that, state it. Being a great saxaphone player in your school is relative to how good the other kids are. Being all district means you are the best of the best.
Show that you can shine in truly competitive ponds. Find a way to do that and you will be set!
