Graduate / MY LETTER OF INTENT/STATEMENT OF PURPOSE FOR MASTERS IN AUTOMATION IN GERMANY [2]
Ever since I came across the saying "We make a living by what we get, we make a life by what we give" by Winston Churchill, contributing my best while taking up any task has been one of my prime goals. During my primary & secondary school education, I was encouraged by my teachers to build basic science models to serve as an aid while conducting classes. In the process, I had the opportunity to learn more and visualize better the concepts being taught. Further, the prospect of contributing my little part towards classes gave me immense pleasure and instilled in me an inclination towards sciences. The many lengths taken by my teachers to make the science classes interesting and fun, further strengthened my desire to learn.
My through and through interest for science and technology led me to choose an engineering stream. Mechatronics being a synergetic combination of Mechanical, Electrical and Electronics and Computing disciplines kindled my interest. Among the few universities offering an undergraduate course on Mechatronics, ***** University being one of the most reputed institutions made me opt for it.
As my first venture, I designed a working model, an "AUTOMATED LEVEL CROSSING SYSTEM" in order to exemplify the working of "MECHATRONICS SYSTEMS". An intelligent level crossing control was devised using micro-controllers and photo sensors to provide increased accuracy and safety. In the course of the project I acquired basic micro-controller programming and circuit-design knowledge.
It was at this juncture that I felt the need to gain valuable industrial experience. As part of my field study I had the opportunity to undergo training at ******, a company manufacturing pneumatics products and providing automation solutions for component suppliers (OEMs). During my training I was amazed by the problem solving techniques used by in-house engineers while providing automation solutions. The visit however being my first exposure to real time automation work process had quite an impact and was a cornerstone which led me to choose Process Automation as a career option.
In addition to the knowledge gained while working on the AUTOMATED LEVEL CROSSONG SYSTEM, during my third year, I studied topics under Microprocessors, Micro-controllers and PLC automation systems. Owing to my previous association with micro-controllers I was able to have a good grasp of the subjects. All the more so, the challenging environment fashioned by my teachers and their encouragement, induced great interest and my liking towards the subjects grew. My education in the field of "Control Systems" and "Fuzzy logic and Neural Networks" helped me view a complete picture of Automation systems. Apart from my education in the field of automation, I also had theoretical and lab courses on "Industrial Robotics" which served to introduce me to the technicalities pertaining to Robotics. My firm understanding of these subjects assisted me in my later undertakings.
During the commencement of my final semester, I signed up for a project at Press shop in ********* for a period of two months. The aim of the project was to reduce material wastage in Press Shop. The material being metal sheets were rejected when more than one sheet was picked up during feeding operation. In order to minimize wastage, an automation involving inductive sensors and an actuation mechanism were integrated into the existing system. In the course of the project a sound knowledge about the inductive sensor and Rockwell automation systems comprising of ControLogix controllers along with RSLogix 5000 series and RSLinx PLC programming softwares were arrived at.
In the light of my excellent academic performance I received a scholarship under the "****" during the academic year 2010 - 2011 which is awarded to the top 10% of students in the university. Apart from academics I took interest in participating in workshops under the robotics cluster at ****, a national level tech-fest conducted at my university yearly. In addition I am also involved in the organizing team of ******, a national level cultural fest also held annually in my university. I have passed my German A1 level examination and I also intend to complete higher levels before joining the program.
Germany is a symbol of technical excellence. As technical skills and excellence cannot be achieved without excellent education, it is therefore a promising destination for higher education. The fact that many of Germany's institutions of higher learning charge little or no tuition fee by international comparison apprised me of the importance Germany holds in higher education. I also value the fact that some of the breakthrough industrial practices have been originally envisaged by German establishments. In order to keep abreast with latest technological advances and to avail myself of the various faculties that German universities boast, I am keen to obtain my masters in Germany in the field of Automation.
It is my firm conviction that the fruits of university education can be relished only when there is sync between the student and the course material. Taking into account my undertakings so far, I am certain that a graduate program in Automation would be the appropriate course to realize my goals. It was the research carried out in the field of "********" that primarily attracted me towards your university. I chose your institution to pursue my graduate studies also because of the distinguished faculty and the excellent infrastructural facilities which make the graduate program ideally suited to my academic ambitions.
It is my intention to pursue my graduate studies at your institution to gain many academic strides and contribute my part to the research focuses. I also feel that graduate study at your university will be the most logical extension of my objectives and I am confident that the wholesome education that I receive at your university will stand me in good stead throughout my career.
My friends suggested that the essay lacks continuity . I would greatly appreciate comments and suggestion on the essay.
