Undergraduate / 'communicating with individuals' - PTCAS-Physical Therapy Essay Question [NEW]

Hi Everyone,

This is my first post. The maximum number of characters with spaces is 4500. I have reached the maximum limit of characters. I am concerned about the third and fifth paragraph because they appear redundant and do not share insightful information on my approach to physical therapy.

Any feedback would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks for all the help.

Describe your decision making process in choosing physical therapy as career over other health career choices? (4500 characters)

Every individual has a purpose in life. As I was growing up, I thought about how I would have an impact on society. Ever since I was young, I viewed my father and uncles' being physical therapists. I went with them to work a few days and immediately felt elation about the profession. Since then, I knew it was my specific obligation to practice as a physical therapist. Other factors that directed my decision of being a physical therapist came later in life.

During my community college years, I volunteered at an outpatient private practice and gained more interest in physical therapy. When I transferred to Northern Illinois University, I joined clubs: the pre-professional association and pre-physical therapy club. These clubs helped me discover other individuals who shared common characteristics and goals such as helping others live their full potential in life. In addition to joining these clubs, I never stopped contributing to society. I have assisted graduate students conduct research in physical chemistry lab for an entire spring semester. This experience greatly helped me work with others. My input was shared with others input to form a distinctive census. I volunteered in the Physical Therapy department at Kishwaukee Hospital in an inpatient setting for 50 hours. The hospital has a friendly atmosphere, which allowed me to interact with a group of physical therapists and occupational therapists to provide rehabilitation services. I have volunteered 24 hours at Northern Rehab, which specializes in sports-related injuries. While volunteering at Northern Rehab, I have gained new techniques from an Orthopedic Physical Therapist, Dr. Christian. I have learned invasive techniques such as vestibular (dizziness) rehab and treatment of neck and back pain. I recall an individual with a vestibular disorder. When there would be rapid movement, he would experience dizziness. Dr. Christian informed me to sit the individual on the bed, then quickly lay them on their back, and look for a doorknob (rapid eye movement). If there is a doorknob movement, then the patient is experiencing a vestibular disorder, vice-versa. Individually speaking with the patient one on one, he informed me that he has been to many other physical therapy specialists, who have not been able to discover the doorknob. However Dr. Christian is able to observe it each time. I will instill the techniques Dr. Christian has taught me to better rehabilitate individuals with dizziness disorders, neck and back pain. Any individual at any time can become injured.

As an emerging physical therapist, I will utilize my thoughts and apply them conceptually to improve patients' health in an effective and efficient manner. Physical therapists are taught to treat patients differently than doctors, nurses, and other healthcare professionals. Doctors and nurses and do not perform specialized functions. The physical therapist has the primary duty of restoring the patients' physical capabilities to an optimal level.

Furthermore, there is greater patient interaction between a physical therapist and a patient compared to other healthcare professionals such as pharmacists, radiologists and anesthesiologists. The physical therapist consistently meets with patients for many months and builds firm relationships. Another career in which patient interaction is essential is provided by an occupational therapist. However, I have decided to become a physical therapist instead of an occupational therapist because of the greater variety of patients who a physical therapist can assess.

Moreover, another reason why I intend to pursue a career as a physical therapist is because of the strong and reliable job market. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the demand for physical therapists is expected to increase from 2010 to 2020 by 39 percent. As being a physical therapist, there will not be an issue of looking for a job because technology is consistently improving. There are far greater chances that an individual may receive an injury then suffer death from an accident as a result of the increased safety.

Finally, becoming a physical therapist will allow me to live my dream. My primary intention is to communicate with individuals so they can achieve the highest optimum level of health they can. I am becoming a physical therapist instead of other healthcare professions because of the greater impact that I would have on an individual's health and well being by building firm relationships.
