Undergraduate / 'my English teacher' - Texas A&M - who has made an impact on your life [3]

We encounter many teachers everyday in our years of schooling. Our encounters with them gradually become ordinary and insignificant as we progress in our careers. However, I believe that our teachers deserve admiration and gratitude for what they have done in influencing us as students. Even though we may dislike what they do or the grades they give us, they still take out years of their lives preparing their lesson plans, assessing our assignments and answering our questions.

There were many such great teachers who have made an impact on my life. One such special teacher I had in my life was Mrs. Maureen Xavier, who was my English teacher when I was in my 8th, 9th and 10th classes in my schooling; she was the one who changed me from the person I was before. At first, I was very mild and timid; a more of a shy kind of person. I never dared to talk in public as it made me very nervous that it resulted in improper communication with many grammatical errors and misspelled words. Apart from speaking, my written work was very much appreciated by her and by few other teachers as well. She used to give an essay topic everyday as an assignment which most of the students found it more taxing as there wasn't sufficient time to complete all the other assignments. She once asked me to read my essay aloud to the class, I was thunderstruck and completely paralyzed due to the nervousness but somewhere deep in my mind I was determined to cast off the stage fear grown inside me. I failed in doing so, which left me embarrassed and dejected. She then asked me to pay her a visit after school, and explained how important speaking was, she even advised me how to get rid of that fear, which she was once a victim herself and told how she overcame it. This little advise motivated me and from the very next day, I started to practice her techniques like imagining no one in the room other than myself while talking to a large group, using less complicated sentences while talking so that the listener understands and imitating native English speakers from movies and international news channels etc.

My efforts yielded me great results. I remember the first speech I have given on the independence day of India about "the cultural heritage of India". It was a great challenge to me as I had to speak to an audience of about 2000 rather than a mere 60. I successfully pulled it off without much difficulty and was applauded and appreciated by many teachers and friends, which was very encouraging. Since then, I began to participate in various debates group discussions, seminars and fared well. Today I'm glad that I have had such a wonderful teacher who made an impact on my life.

I WOULD REALLY APPRECIATE SOME HELP HERE AS SOON AS POSSIBLE

Writing Feedback / (SAT Essay) Can knowledge be a burden? (grade it based on the SAT criteria) [4]

i would give it a 4.
pros:
good information
concise

cons:
a few grammatical and spelling mistakes

for a good SAT essay you need to state the thesis or the topic from the question in the first paragraph and show your opinion on the piece of information that you get after the question while ending your essay, that is where you lost 2

if you have followed the given time limit, you are on the right pace. as you know timing is the most important thing in the SAT and most students don't get to complete the essay (leave aside the mistakes). so keep an eye on that.

Undergraduate / India petroleum engineering- statement of purpose for undergrad admission in the USA [NEW]

hi, i'm christopher from india. i need help with this sop, i've created.does it have any errors and will it rejected. i would really appreciate some help.

STATEMENT OF PURPOSE.
"A journey of a thousand miles starts with a single step." Likewise, life is a constant learning experience in which everyday provides an opportunity to learn more. By becoming an engineer, this is what I hope to achieve in my life as well.

From an early age, I have enjoyed participating in various activities related to science. I wanted to further this by studying them at an advanced level. My reason for taking up petroleum engineering is simply a manifestation of my own curiosity. My interest in natural resources developed when I stumbled upon the terms 'energy conservation' and 'the adverse effects of environmental pollution caused by oil and gas exploration'. These terms intrigued me to a great extent, so I wanted to learn more about them. Ever since then, I decided to be a part of a team that explores ways to reduce pollution and also device more economical ways of exploring oil and gas. I have been constantly reading several books and exploring the internet to find research topics that deal with energy and environmental conservation. This has broadened my knowledge and equipped me with the tools to pursue a career in petroleum engineering.

I have successfully completed my high school with an above average percentile. Apart from my regular life, I like spending my free time with my family and my dog. Listening to music, drawing and playing chess are my favorite pass times. I have been to chess tournaments and even played for my school. I play football and cricket with my friends, but never played for my school team. I like to participate in debates, quizzes, discussions and volunteer myself in social activities. I have a keen interest in computers; in fact, I have done courses dealing with networking and administration in Windows Server- 2008 and Linux operating system in my vacations.

India is a developing country and I am proud to be a part of such a great nation. Many Indians, as myself hold high aims and goals; but to achieve them, there aren't many opportunities presented. Cause - 'corruption'; a word that infers directly to the politicians, who are well versed in the art of rhetoric. All they care about is power and possession. They disseminate false notions on sensitive issues causing a wild fire among the people. In one such incident, they spoiled an 'otherwise good day' with a disturbing and unpleasant strike to shutdown all the working institutions and offices for their own selfish desires. The teacher had to stop the class and make us leave the premises. Such incidents happened many times in my schooling years. Considering these factors and also in the aspects of technology, I decided to continue my studies abroad, as in the USA which is a land of opportunities and where I believe I can achieve my goals through hard work and sincerity.

I am well prepared for the challenges that lie up ahead, hoping that I do my best in becoming a successful person one day.

is it alright?
please post your reviews.
thanks in advance.
