"Describe your academic interests and how you plan to pursue them at USC"

Learning about different cultures has always attracted my interest. After taking many cultural courses, I gained significant insight on worldwide culture and better appreciated the beauty of diversity. African American Humanities and African American History classes, coupled with Spanish language classes and Saturday Chinese school, seemed daunting at first; however, after immersing myself in these fertile courses, I became much more enthusiastic about the richness of humanity and I became much more familiar with the struggles of minorities. However, more importantly, I'm more cultured to think in their spectrum and respect the traditions of our world. I plan to pursue international relations at the University of Southern California. USC is a breeding ground for diversity and consists of the highest international student population among all universities. The university will broaden my experiences to include real life interactions with a truly global atmosphere; and with USC's rich language courses, my unhealthy passion for diverse cultures can only take off.

Tell us about an activity that is important to you, and why.

Playing the guitar has been an integral part of my life for the past two years. I may not have Led Zeppelin or Carlos Santana's skills on the guitar; In fact, I'm probably the worst guitarist among my peers during my guitar lessons. However, whether it's practicing new guitar chords in my room or strumming on Sunday morning at church, I am always learning and improving myself. The guitar embodies the American dream in that hard work leads to success. Born musically inclined, playing guitar has influenced me to work hard and to be endearing in my pursuits. In devoting countless hours to practicing, I can see all the hard work pay off when I perform and receive praise from simply my mom or my friends. The guitar is my refuge from the stresses of my world, such as my family's endless financial struggles or upcoming finals. I may never be unblemished in my solos or be flawless in maneuvering around the fret boards; however, it's the effort that counts. And at the end of the day, there's no harm in pretending to be a rock star.
