Undergraduate / Columbia Sup. 2! Essay for an essay? [3]

REVISED!:

When I was young, in the schools I attended, no one seemed to care why the Mentos blew up the soda liter; no one coveted the microscopes or handled them with care. But everything changed when I came to Dougherty Valley high school. I heard students speak with such eloquence and reason, the conversation I always yearned for. There were countless academic activities like Science Alliance, math club, and Speech and Debate. Ever since then I have searched for a similar academically rich place to be.

When I came across Columbia, it was exactly what I'd been searching for this entire time. The academics at Columbia have prevailed throughout my entire college search. With over twenty professors and plenty of research opportunities in the department of biochemistry molecular biophysics, I'm sure that I gain knowledge anywhere I go. As I strolled down Columbia walk, I instantly felt the camaraderie. Chatting with avant-garde scholars, I was delighted with the intelligent banter, exchange of ideas, and attentiveness. The atmosphere I had only dreamed of became reality. The instant I entered the door, colloquy permeated the room as teacher and student voiced theories and hypotheses of scientific research. Rapt by their confabulation, I was lost in a reverie that one imminent day, their jargon would become my vernacular.

Undergraduate / Knitting; Common App / extracurricular & work experience [4]

"ARGH" I cried in frustration. Another stitch had slipped for the fourth time. On that row alone too! As I surgically threaded the needle back on as to not lose the loop, I began to question myself. "What am I doing?" I felt like giving up. But like usual, I continued to knit stitch after stitch until I finished the row. Again I tasted that sweet, addictive, zing of success. Knitting is simplistic in concept. There exists only two moves, the knit and the purl. However, the difficulty and scope of the piece is only determined by the imagination of the creator. Just like in life, knitting requires the determination and perseverance to sit and knit for tens of thousands of stitches without losing sight of your goal. I have found spiritual solace within the twists of yarn in times of despair and a propensity to appreciate the skill, determination, and ingenuity required to create objects I took for granted (you can delete this) . Knitting is a form of art that allows me to express my own sense of aesthetics. It can be as orthodox as a sweater, or as abstract as a Sneed in "The Lorax", by Dr.Seuss.

Undergraduate / Columbia Sup. 2! Essay for an essay? [3]

Please tell us what you find most appealing about Columbia and why. (1500 Char. max)

For years I was sent to a private Christian school, only to be bullied and tormented by rich, obnoxious students. Placed into a public elementary school, I found true friends, but still, I felt unhappy. No one seemed to care why the Mentos blew up the soda liter; no one coveted the microscopes or handled them with care. My parents saw my agony with these dispassionate kids and we moved to San Ramon. I attended Dougherty Valley, the high school with the extremely challenging classes, champion of academics in the district. Everyday, students spoke with such eloquence and reason, the conversation I always yearned for. Even our cross-country team was deemed the NCS Scholastic Athletes. I was home.

In senior year, I remembered graduation was soon; I would be homeless unless I searched for somewhere new. And then I came across the Columbia. As I strolled down Columbia walk, I instantly felt the camaraderie among students. Chatting with avant-garde scholars, I was delighted with the intelligent banter, exchange of ideas, and attentiveness. An atmosphere I had only dreamed of became reality. The academics at Columbia have prevailed throughout my entire college search. The instant I entered the door, colloquy permeated the room as teacher and student voiced theories, hypotheses, and conclusions of scientific research. Rapt by their confabulation, I was lost in a reverie that one imminent day, their jargon would become my vernacular.

I wanted to make it sound like I've reached a calm or something but if you thought it was cocky then I'll take it out. Thanks!

Undergraduate / Why Columbia? 'I felt at home. I felt part of the community' [3]

I knew that any student there could be anyone from a concert pianist to an Olympic athlete, but everyone was a Columbian. Within the diversity and distinction is unity; Columbia is a family, a home.

I feel like that seems better because the first time I read that last sentence, I was a bit confused. See if this change sounds right to you.

Undergraduate / Cellular processes ; BU / WHY APPLY/ [4]

In no more than 250 words, please tell us why BU is a good fit for you and what specifically has led you to apply for admission?

In my freshman biology class, I became extremely intrigued about cellular processes such as protein synthesis and mitosis. I asked my teacher endless questions about the course material because I was eager to know more. The way that countless body mechanisms function simultaneously to produce life fascinates me; I hope to take advantage of Boston University's programs in biology and laboratory research to discover a way of manipulating cancer cells so that effective vaccines and remedies can be implemented. In particular, the Undergraduate Research Opportunities Program that Boston offers captured my attention. Maria Panchenko's Cell Biology and Biochemistry project investigating affects of protein complexes on the regeneration of tissues is a program I hope to participate in. While main focus remains in academics, Boston allows exploration and engagement in student groups. Campus Crusade for Christ and Pianists Association are organizations I have been involved in throughout high school would love to continue. As a university, amalgamation of ideas and a cultural awareness is of the utmost importance. Coming from a school populated by students of the same nationalities, the diversity of Boston could be a renaissance for me. At this excellent institution, interacting and sharing ideas with people from around the world will widen my limited perspective of world. With Boston's wide spectrum of opportunities, I know that this school is the perfect place for me, and I am certain that Boston University will soon be called my home.
