Essays / Visual Rhetoric essay introduction [4]

The civil rights movement of the 1950's and 1960's was a grassroots effort by blacks to fight for inalienable rights guaranteed by the United States constitution. Initiated by women, such as, Rosa Parks and engineered by men, such as, Dr. King. The peaceful demonstrations and organized boycotts made an indelible impression upon all races worldwide. A growing number of historical researchers acknowledge that the civil rights movement was positively impacted by the Cold War. Yet this aspect of the civil rights movement has not been reflected in American history. These images depicting Russian propaganda, Chinese propaganda and American photo-journalism expresses the domestic and international intolerance of racial injustice during the civil rights movement. I will visually argue that communist propaganda from Russia and China, in addition to, real time photo-journalism exposing internal civil strife aided the civil rights movement in America.
