Book Reports / Maturity Gets You Through Life; To Kill a Mockingbird [2]

Maturity Gets You Through Life
By Anna Doline

At this moment there are 6,470,818,671 people in the world. Some are running scared. Some are coming home. Some tell lies to make it through the day. Others are just not facing the truth. Some are mature. Some are evil men, at war with good. And some are good struggling with evil. Six billion people in the world, six billion souls, and sometimes... all you need is one. One might be mature in your own way but it can change depending on who you're with. In To Kill a Mockingbird Jem and Scout are both young kids who don't understand a lot and aren't mature enough to realize that the world isn't as safe as it seems.

Jem is about 10 years old when the book first starts then at the end of part one he is age 13. Jem would do anything not to be called a chicken even if it means being more immature than anybody. When Dill asked him to go touch the Radley house at first he said " I hope you've got it through your head that he'll kill us each and everyone, Dill Harris." said Jem, when we joined him. "Don't blame me when he gouges your eyes out. You started it remember." (Lee 15) "You gonna run out on a dare?" asked Dill. "If your are then..." " Dill you have to think about these things," Jem said. "Lemme think a minute...it's sort of like making a turtle come out..." "How's that? asked Dill. "Strike a match under him." (Lee 15) That shows that he's immature just by saying that. It shows that he thinks that animals aren't important and they don't feel. This shows how he is immature. Later on in the story Jem starts to get more and more mature because when Scout and him went out to shoot things with the guns Scout went in shot birds but Jem went and shot cans, because he felt bad that he would be killing the poor animals that didn't do anything to him so he shot cans instead. PUT QUOTE HERE>> However Scout is only 6 in the beginning so we can't expect her to be very mature but we notice when she stood up for the Cunningham boy in class she was very mature about it because the teacher didn't understand why he wouldn't take the money for food, but she knew why was because he knew he could never pay her back. But then after in the playground she was beating him up for not saying anything himself and just letting her take the blame. PUT QUOTE HERE>> Scout matures later on in the story because when Cecil Jacobs said that her dad defends n*****s she was ready for a fight but instead she said "I was far too old and too big for such childish things..." (Lee 82). Although Scout was still young she learns more and more how to be mature but she has to realize how to walk away from a fight or just not care. Also she has to deal with the atrocious behavior of some of the people in Macomb.

In the first part know one was very mature in Macomb but in the end of part one everyone changes. Places don't change but people do. Jem and Scout will hopefully understand how things are supposed to be in life. Being mature is something that will come sooner or later.
