Undergraduate / "My parents instilled the idea of open mindedness" ;Transfer Reasons & Objectives [2]

Please provide a statement (appr. 250-500 words) that addresses your reasons for transferring and the objectives you hope to achieve.

As I grew up, my parents instilled in me the concepts of open-mindedness and acceptance of other cultures. My mother's side of the family lives in Jamaica. I spent majority of my summers on that beautiful island, and created some of my fondest memories there. A unique combination of the music, food, weather, and people that I encountered soon made me fascinated with foreign cultures. I learned to appreciate the Jamaican culture, as it differs from that of Americans. Also, my father spent nearly 10 years of his life abroad in Europe. He would tell me stories of his time in England, Germany, Sweden, and Portugal, just to name a few, and how each country had a different atmosphere. He taught me that there are always new things to appreciate, whether they are languages or native customs. Although I thoroughly enjoy hearing my parent's encounters with various cultures, I know it is my time to have my own experiences and stories to tell.

Although Georgia State University is challenging academically, it lacks one personal goal of mine. My love of travel has motivated me to want to see what the world has to offer. My attraction to different cultures encourages me to want to know more about social structures in various parts of the world. By attending Richmond, not only will I be academically challenged, I will be culturally enlightened. I am confident that I will attain a worldview education from people that have the desire to break down stereotypical barriers. The motto alone, "Unity in diversity," coincides with my dream to learn from students and professors from around the globe. Not to mention, London is one of the most densely populated cities on earth. Compared to my home in the southeastern region of the United States, diversity in London is encouraged, respected, and acknowledged.

If given the opportunity to complete my studies at Richmond, I would take advantage of numerous on-campus organizations. For instance, I believe my interpersonal and leadership skills would benefit Amnesty International. Because majority of the student body are foreigners, it is important that we establish a connection to our new surroundings as well as host events that will unite the campus. The Richmond International Society also peaked my interest because it provides the opportunity for student to organize trips to other countries. As a marketing major, this networking opportunity will make resumé colorful and my college career both exciting and memorable.
