Why do I want to become a doctor?
By: Ricardo Burdier.

As most of children do, I always wondered what would I end up studying when I went to college, but as a 7 year old I thought it was not possible to know because I was only a kid.

When I was 10 years old, on Christmas Eve, I broke my left arm. My parents quickly took me to the hospital. It was my first time at a Hospital. I had 3 surgeries and then went home blown away because I never actually thought what it takes to be a doctor until I saw it myself.

The doctor explained how my procedure was going to be done. He also explained how the anesthesia worked and how my life would be in their hands while I was asleep. It frightened me at first, but when I saw the respect my parents had towards the doctor, the doctor's ability to ease my pain, and his skills of communicating with me as a patient; it actually made me think of becoming a physician some day. From that day, I knew that I have a medical vocation.

Furthermore, when I got into high school, I worked on a Social Work program that consisted in helping kids from a children's hospital next to our school. There, I realized why exactly I want to be a doctor. The relationship between doctors and kids was what caught my eye. You could see how all the doctors were taking care of each patient as if they were their own family. This experience truly gave me the confidence to go after such a challenging career and just the thought of serving people and taking care of them every day, for me, is a privilege.

I also had the opportunity to get some experience in the medical profession when I volunteered to help at a hospital in my city. There, I had the chance to work directly with physicians of my country and realized how valuable the communication between doctors and patients is and how doctors generate trust from their patients. Also, I saw how effective it is to work as a team, I saw some excellent physicians serving people from different backgrounds, but I also saw there is so much that can improve.

For Example, the quantity of people that came to the hospital without health insurance was enormous, and most of them could not afford a medical consultation.

Dominican Republic as a third world country must focus on improving their quality of health care. As a future doctor, I firmly believe that every physician has the duty to help every person they can regardless their financial situation, or their skin color or even their precedence. To receive a quality health care is a right that every human being must have.

What I'm trying to say is that while there are doctors earning millions of dollars for helping a few, there are millions of people out there who needs a good medical attention, and they do not have access to it because of the expensive medical consultation of this doctors.

As a future doctor, I have the commitment to let the most people that can take advantage of my preparation, so one day when I become a Doctor I'd be proud to say that I have saved more lives than the number of dollars I have in my wallet.

I hope to be a part of this improvement because everyone has the right to a good health care no matter who he or she is or where he or she comes from. My truly desire is to use my abilities and my preparation to achieve my vision of what a doctor should be.
