Undergraduate / A variety of factors influenced my decision to pursue my studies in becoming a PA [2]

A variety of factors have influenced my decision to pursue my studies in becoming a Physician Assistant. What began to solidify my interest in medicine was in large part due to growing up with my grandmother. Today my grandmother is 95 years old and is still physically active but suffers from Alzheimer's disease. The symptoms of her Alzheimer's began to appear in my early teenage years and at times it was very difficult for my parents to live with and to take care for her. When they grew frustrated, however, I would speak up for her and urge my parents to be more patient with her, because I knew that caring for someone with a deteriorating short term memory can be a challenging endeavor for everyone involved. I grew to enjoy the idea of playing a pivotal role in someone's health, of having a high level of responsibility for someone, and I subscribe to the notion of being a lifelong learner in a vocation that truly helps people. Though I have since participated in a number of internships and shadowing opportunities, my natural empathy and compassion are byproducts of my childhood.

A variety of internships and shadowing experiences have exposed me to what a day in the life of a PA could be like. Throughout my work in different hospitals and from my experience in shadowing various PAs, I have been able to ask questions about the profession so that I can truly reflect upon my motivations for becoming a PA. My desire to become a PA began during my freshman year of college. As I contemplated what occupation would both allow me to use my natural interpersonal skills and be intrinsically rewarding, a career in medicine quickly came to mind. As an intern, I have witnessed many procedures, but the one that stands out to me is the Cesarean section delivery I was able to watch during an Emergency Medical Technician clinical. I believe that from the moment I held the newborn, my desire to become a PA was solidified. I knew that even though the path to PA school would be difficult, it was the right path for me. As a current a full time Patient Care Technician at Sacred Heart Hospital, I have learned the importance of having patience, being professional and showing compassion toward my patients. My work as a PCT has given me a better understanding of how the medical team works together to meet the patients' needs.

Although I have had academic difficulties along the way in earning my bachelor's degree, I believe there is something to be said about resolve to maintain my career goals in the face of setbacks. I can attribute a lot of my personal fortitude and discipline to my times as a competitive tennis player. I have failed, yet where I have failed I have become more experienced and more mature. I do not believe that one can summarize me by simply looking at my academic resume. My academic stumbles came early, and I have been on a steady path toward improvement and daily refinement since. I believe that if you are capable, you should pursue your vision of yourself with vigor even when others tell you differently. I have confidence that my capabilities that will lead to success in a PA school, and as the months go on, I will continue to diversify and improve my knowledge and experience. Everything I am currently doing is geared toward preparing me for a career in medicine. I am not afraid of failure, nor am I afraid of working hard to achieve my goals. I believe it is time I get highly invested in the process of realizing my dreams and I believe I would be a great candidate for your school.
