Undergraduate / 'Lived in China' - Major of Economics - UC Personal Statement [2]

Economics, my intended major, influents my life and changes my life. However, I, a small character, am also effecting and benefiting the economy and society.

Having Lived in China for 16 years and the United States for four years, my life and way of thinking have been changed by the differences between two countries. The hug economic inequality gap is one of the biggest problems in China and the income per person is much less than the per capita consumption expenditure. It is quite normal that people cannot afford their up to living standards with their income. The similar good that is sold in China is more expensive, but has a poorer quality compared to the U.S. On the other hand, as long as people in the U.S. live on their own hands and have a job, they would not be starving, but the government's credit is indispensable. In China, I would not have a car for going to school, I would not have financial aid for college, and I would not have enough money to pay the school fees with my part-time job. Living in bay area, the head of high technology of the United States, I profoundly experienced that different economic levels create different living standards, which inspired me to be eager to learn economics.

Having worked as a waitress for a half year, once again, I intensely realized economics and accounting influenced everybody in the world at any time. Friday, Saturday, and Sunday are the busiest days for restaurants. However, no one would be able to tell when would be the exceptions. Even though nobody came in, the expense of electricity and salaries still had to be paid by the employer. Some people came in with their families and ordered plenty of foods; some people came in alone and ordered only a bowl of rice; some people came in to eat and left without paying anything; some people could have more in their plates because of the good season . . . I saw in my own eyes that "money makes the world go round". Without consciously noticing, we all contribute to our economies in a variety of ways. People affect economy by the consumption; undoubtedly, economy also affects people's lives by the supply and demand: the deflation and inflation.

While studying the subject that affects most aspects of my life, I feel powerful, motivated, and ambitious. My dream that has been engraved in my heart for a long time, is to contribute and benefit the society by what I have gain from my schools, teachers, and experiences.
