UTSA - Describe an Example of leadership, be sure to describe your actions. [2]
To become a leader, one has to have the ability to compromise, the ability to listen well, the ability compromise, and the ability to empathize determination. Over the course of my life and high school career I have influenced people and inspired them not only to believe in themselves but to also inspire others. I gained a first glance at leadership in the realm of sports, being named co captain of the basketball team over the course of the season as early as my freshman year. At the end I won Rookie of the Year in the league and the program taught me how to bring out the best out people.
The next year the basketball program fell apart because of money issues with the school being able to afford a team as a result o this known fact many of my teammates left. With the remaining players I decided to fill out a survey like paper indicating the school athletes who would not only want a basketball program to continue but also participate in one. The survey was sent with a letter and with the help of school fundraisers to team was made and I was named captain. At the end of the season we reached the playoffs first round before being eliminated. The aftermath was not that we got that far but that we still had a competitive team. As for me I managed to set an example for incoming and current athletes that quitting is not the answer. I got rewarded in front of the school when the story of the team was mentioned at the end of the year and also received a medal in Physical Education.
Since starting high school I have always dreamt of achieving higher education in the United States. Coming from Puerto Rico and with my parents struggling with financial issues I knew it would be hard but not impossible. I am a firm believer of dreaming big and pursing goals with a hearty determination. So over the course of my junior year I started talking with friends that had made the leap to study in the USA. Every single day I would go over the college requirements for my favorite schools of course, UTSA being one of them. Amazingly I got an internship offer in the University of Oregon but when USA's economic aid fell through for Puerto Rico I couldn't afford it. Instead of holding my head down and being bitter I decided to keep on working on my grades and venture out more opportunities by joining the National Honor Society.
Like my basketball team it was up to me to make a difference in my life. I received a call from my best friend and ex basketball teammate living in San Antonio, Texas. Much to my inquiry, he told me all about his new school and the education system within Tom C Clark. At the end he told me he told me: "if you're interested my family has a bedroom open in my room and we could be roommates". I knew then this was an opportunity I could not refuse. His offer was my golden gate to higher education and helping my family out. The next months I would spend convincing my parents, telling my friends and planning out the cost. I would Skype with him and both families would talk about the idea. Finally I left after finishing my first semester of my junior year. For the next following semesters I spent sharing a room with my friend helping him learn English at a rapid pace.
Today a new challenge has risen and that is paying for college in the United States. After closely scrutinizing and inspecting colleges with my counselor I have concluded that UTSA is the best choice for my business degree but I am still open to choices of such as UT Austin. I strongly believe that leadership is one of my most enduring qualities and with financial help I can accomplish my dreams working for a degree to be an IT Manager. My past experiences have taught me that you can achieve your goals if you have strong values and initiative/ leadership. Every opportunity is a way to show myself I can stand out, I am very grateful for the amount of help people have giving me over the years and my only mission now is to make myself, my country and them proud.
