Scholarship / I have a full and happy life; Marine Corps Scholarship [2]

In no less than 500 words, tell us how your family and/or significant persons have influenced your desire to pursue a higher education. Include what, if any, influence your parent's Marine Corps/Navy career has had on you, and describe any special circumstances - military deployments, unemployment, or other situations - that have affected your life and inspired your decision to further your academic career.

While they may have had good reasons at the time, I have witnessed people around me give up their dreams to follow a different path. I will not allow myself to get into a situation where my dreams and happiness come second. I will achieve this goal by getting a degree and pursuing my dream. My whole life I have watched both my Dad and Mom work at jobs that they disliked, then I saw my brother follow the same path. I am determined to be different, and be happy in what I do.

Both my Dad and Mom have worked very hard at jobs that they both dislike to support my brother and I. My Mom had a dream of being a nurse, and she started to pursue a degree in nursing. But then she realized how quickly the costs were adding up and that they would continue to increase, so her dream went out the window. She then went to work in retail, next she cleaned houses, and the next job she hated more than the one before and the cycle continued. While my Dad did get to pursue his dream to a certain degree, he is still unhappy with his current work. But they both continue to do things that they dislike to make assured that my brother and I have a good life.

When I was growing up, I was constantly stepping on colored pencils and crumpled up pieces of paper. My brother was in love with drawing, and was determined to chase his dream to become a professional artist. I watched as he slowly lost this determination because he didn't want to go to school. First he got a job installing carpets, which was a good job for him because he was allowed to make his own carpet designs, which allowed him to express some of his creativity. But then that business shut down, so he was left with no job. Now he is working as an electrician's assistant and taking classes at a trade school to get his electricians license. While I applaud him for taking these steps to advance his life, he detests everything about this career, and I do not want that to be me.

My parents separated in 2007, and my Mom and I moved to Pennsylvania. Money became even tighter when we were relying on only one income. After many months of looking for alternatives, things got to the point that my Mom needed to apply for government assistance. She felt like she wasn't doing enough for me, while I completely believed and trusted that she was doing everything possible to keep me happy. There was a lot of guilt on my Mom's part due to depending on someone else to provide for me and herself. Thankfully she finally found a job that pays enough to support our household without relying on the assistance of other's.

I appreciate and respect everything that my parents have given up to make sure I have a full and happy life, even if that meant that they were unhappy. While I would do anything for my family, I want to be able to give my own children a good life, but also make sure that I am happy. I wholeheartedly believe that the only I will be able to achieve my dream is to earn a degree.
