Reckless drivers in United States threaten the lives of thousands of people every year and should be punished much more severely than they currently are. In reckless driving, the driver displays a disregard for the rules of the road and the crime is intentional. Driver is aware that he/she is driving dangerously against the street law threatening other peoples' lives. Most of the time, causes for reckless driving is similar to ones of major crimes such as assault and murder, anger and ignorance of the law. Reckless driving is not much different than major crimes. Therefore, it should be treated more like a major crime rather a light crime. Most of the punishments for crimes in US are proportional to the seriousness of the crime and the damage it does to the society. Reckless drivers should get more severe punishments as they pose similar amounts of threat as major crimes to the society. Number of deaths and casualties cause by reckless driving a year in US is well over ten-thousand people. It is very close to the number of people killed from homicide a year. Approximately 25% of the drivers who admit to be reckless drivers end up in an accident with serious casualties. Number of reckless drivers in US is increasing every year and pose the similar amount of dangers to the society as major crimes. Reckless drivers should have to go through much more punishment as they need to be warned not to commit a same crime again before being allowed back on the streets driving in order to keep them from committing a same crime again. Increased punishment will give the driver a second thought before driving recklessly. It will stop the driver from being careless of the law and cause him/her to pay closer attention. Light punishments such as fines and few months in jail is not enough for people who threaten thousands of peoples' safety with an approximately one in four chance of seriously hurting or killing someone. Car accidents is a very big threat to the safety of the society as approximate chance of dying from a car accident in a lifetime is one in hundred. Appropriate measures should be taken to make the society safe from unnecessary car accidents, and the best way to do that is to increase the severity of the punishment for reckless driving.
