Scholarship / Mental Arithmetic Skill vs Calculator Use for student - IELTS Writing Task 2 [2]
Some people believe that electronics should not be allowed in school until after the pupils have mastered mental arithmetic. Others believe that calculators save pupils time, especially with complicated calculations. Discuss both views and give your opinion.
More attention should be paid on the usage of electronic calculators in the learning process. Whilst I believe that calculator saves students' time to calculate difficult calculations, I firmly agree that calculator should be used after the students have mastered mental calculator.
I have a notion that calculator use in early stage can harm students' ability to learn mathematics as it easier to use rather than paper-and pencil computation. In Singapore, for example, were the usage of calculators had been limited to post-primary levels. The calculators use in school often presents the worst-case scenario of pupils who are unable to perform basic computations. Although the existence of calculator as calculation tools can saves students' time in calculating, it also can build serious problem for the students' calculating skill.
On the other hand, the calculators are the useful tools to enhance problem solving skills.
