Graduate Essay to Pursue a Masters in Counseling!
The Beating in My Heart
As I hang my head over my bed and watch my curls hit the floor, I close my eyes and try to imagine my life before the depression, loneliness and anxiety. Waiting until I cannot stand the throbs in my head and feel like me eyes are going to burst out with blood I push myself up and begin to journal. During the first year of college at nineteen I began to feel things deeply and take words seriously, words that really had no meaning at all. I was struggling and it felt like every breath I took was like a battle against the British, it was then when I reached out for counseling and attended Talk Therapy. Feeling the success and accomplishments at the end of each session motivated me and made me realize that I had to share this discovery by becoming a counselor myself. Watching my Counselor discuss the steps towards improvement and having her listen to my stories with such empathy awakened my heart and made it thirsty for more knowledge and more information about becoming apart of this brilliant organization.
Studying Psychology throughout my undergraduate years while attending counseling, helped me realize my aspirations and what I would like to continue as a counselor. I would aim to help others grow and become more aware of our diverse population, mental illnesses and the outcome of therapy. It is important for counselors to obtain the knowledge and understanding of different cultures and religions because clients do not come from the same ethnic group; and need someone there to understand their individuality. It is my goal to help raise that awareness amongst other counselors, so we can use the appropriate therapy techniques. Most non-clients do not know the seriousness of a mild illnesses and how it can progress in to something crucial. It would be my goal to help them understand the major affects that could occur and lead them into therapy. Also, the community needs to become more informed on the positive effects of counseling. I would like to help them become more acquainted with these outcomes and diminish any discrimination that may come along with counseling.
The aspirations I set for myself are based on what I have learned and I what I believe needs more work. They are specific and concise; they allow me to focus on exactly what I need to do to keep moving forward. These specific goals help me stay committed and help me plan out my next step. I achieve and accomplish so much when I narrow my factors down and have a clear mind of what needs to be done. While reaching for these goals I notice that I sometimes pay too close to the rules and regulations rather than being more original or creative. When I notice this I correct it by taking a step back and writing down the things that I enjoy and love, then incorporate that into the paper or project.
After I underwent counseling I was able to help a classmate who was possibly going through depression. When she described her thoughts to me, I was immediately committed to helping her and leaped for the opportunity to give her some coping methods. Through out the year we discussed journaling and joining groups on campus. The couple hours I dedicated helped and encouraged her to see a licensed counselor. I am very motivated and passionate when it comes to counseling and I believe that I will be a great asset to the counseling community by helping individuals grow towards a positive life.
