Book Reports / In reference to "The Curious incident of the dog in the night-time" [8]
These are arguments i thought the negative team may come up with and my response to them. Let me know what you think.
1) Ed Boone is not an appropriate carer for Christopher because of his violent and unpredictable behaviour.
The negative team believes that this behaviour would have an adverse effect on Christopher and consequently mean that Ed Boone is not suitable to be Christopher's career. However, for majority of the time, Ed Boone was patient and caring when dealing with his son. If we weigh up all the instances where Ed Boone has been tolerant and then the occurrences where he has had an outburst, the supportive , patient Ed Boone outweighs the latter. Even Christopher admits this on page 103, "Father is a more level-headed person, which means he doesn't get angry as quickly and he doesn't shout as often." Christopher then compares his mother as the opposite, "Mother had hit me sometimes because she was a very hot-tempered person, which means that she got angry more quickly than other people and shouted more often." This quote proves that Judy Boone was more violent and unpredictable than Ed Boone proving that Ed Boone is the most appropriate person to take on the role of Christopher's carer.
2) The negative team also stated that Christopher needs truth in his life and Ed Boone lied to him about his mothers death.
The affirmative does not deny that Ed Boone lied to Christopher regarding his mother and her relationship with Roger Shears , but we believe that this was done in an effort to protect his son from any feeling of hurt or rejection from his mother. Ed Boone did not want Christopher to think that his mother was shying away from responsibility and could not cope with her own son. Ed Boone always tried to do the best by his son and to protect him from harm or danger. As you all are aware, it is difficult to be truthful all the time and Ed Bone recognises this, "Life is difficult, you know. It's bloody hard telling the truth all the time." but he makes an effort to inform Christopher that he is going to tell the truth from that moment onwards. With this comment in mind, we can put our trust in Ed Boone that he has acknowledged his sons dependence and need for truth, and that he will continue to do the best by his son.
Did i mention that i am third speaker?
