Chevening Scholarship Leadership Essay
Good evening! I would like to share with you my essay for the Chevening Scholarship. I have a Bacherlor's in Psychology and I am interested in applying to a MA in Interpreting and Translation in the UK. I'd like to follow the Spanish-English-French language path and it would be very helpful for me if you could tell me your opinions about my leadership essay. In addition, I will be posting the other essays as well. Since being a leader is probably a different concept for each person, I would probably stand out my leadership experience on my previous job at Navistar International.
Since I was the first ever hired psychologist, there had never been any mental health campaigns before. In virtue of, I developed a mental health program, focused on stress inoculation. I decided to work with stress inoculation because I observed many people dealing with a long schedule and difficulties during their shifts. The program lasted four weeks for the employees, so the program content was easy to understand and very practical.
The program also included offering them the psychological assistance service. I wrote and developed this program so it could be a permanent mental health campaign for the company to prevent mental disorders. The project was added into the medical care campaigns so it could take place every year from now on.
Another experience I had as a leader was with a university project I was chosen to run out as a former representative in 2017. The task was to develop a health project for vulnerable community in my hometown, Victoria. I had to work with eight students from school year below me and only one from the same school year as me.
Probably, the most challenging thing was to be able to delegate different tasks according to their level of knowledge and abilities. With the eldest classmates, I informed them the structure of the project and what kind of psychological approach we would be using, to be able to develop life skills, such as problem-solving, assertive family communication and to provide them information about government facilities in which they could get access to health care services, which many of them did not know or had ever heard of.
Along with my classmates Carlos and Patricia, we reviewed the project structure and the sponsorships. Once the project was finished, I had the dissertation in front of a jury. Two weeks later, we got awarded on first place. As reward, we all received an extra point in our grades on that semester and the project took place in the community of almost seventy people.
Finally, I would mention the article I published on psychology journal named 'Psychology and Health' from Universidad Veracruzana. My desire was to contribute to science, which lead me to do research about journals that were interested on the topic. It took over six months to be reviewed and get accepted. I sent the cover letters and authorizations with the support of my teachers Miss Báez and Miss Torres. The article was officially published in January 2020, and it can be found on the journal platform and on my Google Scholar profile.
To conclude, I would say my leader strengths are in being observant, detecting people's needs, strengths and abilities for the design and organization of projects involving well-being, communities, and communication.
