'wanderlust in life' - My favorite word and why scholarship essay

When I was a young girl, I often got lost in busy streets or crowded malls. No matter the number of times my mother told me "Do not wander", I still found myself lost and in tears. I never understood why I was drawn to the rush of wandering off, but it was something that stuck with me as I grew. What started out as a habit of wandering, ended up manifesting into wanderlust.

Out of all the words in the dictionary, wanderlust will always be my favorite. Before I explain why I chose this word and what it means to me, It is only right I explain its definition. The word wanderlust means a deep desire to explore and enjoy the world. To me, wanderlust means a desire to travel around the world seeing new things, smelling new smells, and experiencing other peoples cultures. It is a unique word that has consumed me.

The first time I went on my first plane ride I was only two years old with a full head of curls and big brown eyes. My mother took pictures of my sister and I doing everything from swimming in the pool to dancing the hula with the fire dancers. When I look back at those, I knew that traveling was in my blood. Thankfully I was not the only person with a case on wanderlust. My father took us on many trips to see other countries around the world. This resulted in us being accepting of others. I am lucky to say I had visited almost all of the Caribbean by the age of fourteen. I am aware that many have not had the luxury of traveling as much as I have, and that is why I appreciate every detail about my trips. I think if everybody had a little wanderlust in their bloodstream, the world would be a more peaceful place.

Although It seems like I have had many luxuries in my life, I have lacked simple luxuries that mean a lot to me as well. My parents divorced when I was nine years old, leaving me to be raised with a single mother. My life has not been easy. Money, or the lack of it, controlled our lives. I never understood till now why wanderlust is truly my favorite word. To me, wanderlust means an escape. An escape from the struggles, the money, the divorce, and of my nightmares. Because of the wanderlust pumping through my veins, I knew that I wanted to leave after graduation. I long for the opportunity to go to to school in another state and live on my own. I want to explore, and create my own adventures. I live to see Fiji, Thailand, and India. I dream about swimming with the dolphins in Maldives, or going fishing in the Bahamas all while giving thanks to the man above who created it all.

A quote by Henry David Thoreau that I live by is also one that justifies my wanderlust. " I wanted to live deep and suck out the marrow of life.". I want to experience all that life has to offer. I want to live for the people whose lives got cut too short and those who are confined to a hospital bed. I want to be wanderlust in life, and love. The word wanderlust is not just a pretty word that rolls off the tongue. Wanderlust is my life.
