Charles Dickens assessments

Intro

Charles Dickens novel Great Expectations was set in the Victorian era during 1837 to 1901. Child labour was a certain trend during the Victorian era for jobs like chimney sweepers working in factories and mines. Children as young as three were put to work. Life expectancy was also extremely low seeing as Children who constantly worked 16 hours a day ended up dying by the age of 25 or sometimes even younger. Charles Huffam Dickens born on 7 February 1812, son of Elizabeth Dickens and John dickens, also the husband of Catherine Thomson Hogarth who he than became a father of ten children named Charles Culliford Boz Dickens C. C. B. Dickens, later known as Charles, Mary Dickens, Kate Macready Dickens, Walter Landor Dickens, Francis Jeffrey Dickens, Alfred D'Orsay Tennyson Dickens, Sydney Smith Haldimand Dickens, Sir Henry Fielding Dickens, Dora Annie Dickens and Edward Dickens.

Atmosphere

Atmosphere is a way to create mystery and suspense in many ways. During Pips trip to the graveyard Charles Dickens uses the terms 'Dark and Bleak' dark being a place less visible than being in a spot of light and bleak meaning something is depressing and somber, being at a graveyard is a depressing experience seeing as you are their to remember somebody who was part of your life. During Pips trip to the grave yard he encounters a convict who is also battered and bruised to go with the atmosphere of being unwelcoming which helps it build up mystery as to why the convict is in the graveyard seeing as it is not the ideal place to be. To top it off the place is infested with nettles and dykes to make it even more unwelcoming where as Miss Havishams mansion may not be so welcoming but still has that sense of warmth but like the graveyard is extremely dark

Characters

In Great Expectations, Miss Havisham is not always nice. She ruined Estella's life (Adopted daughter) by teaching her to despise of all men and treat them ways people should not be treated, this is the reason Estella has such a hate for Pip when she first meets him she insults him because he is a male. Miss Havisham is certainly a sad lady who shows sign of being mentally unstable, the reason for this is she describes how she was left at the altar and vowed never to leave her house again until the man she loves returns. During Pips visit to Miss Havisham he glances around the room and notices many things which were meant to be white but had become yellow and he also noticed that she could not smile anymore seeing as her mouth had dropped.
